Volume 17, Number 29 - Monday 12 January 2004
The official bulletin of the Rotary Club of Kowloon Golden Mile is published
most Mondays and is distributed to all club members, District officials and
to "friends of KGM".

Winner "Best English Language Bulletin" in District 3450, 2001/2002

This Week's Meeting:

Our guest speaker this week is Ms. Marija Minic who will be speaking to us about Conservation in South East Asia.

From Under The Kitchen Sink:
O
ur spy in the Holiday Inn Golden Mile kitchen, Vincent "The Galloping Gourmet" Lam, is "Missing In Action" yet again, so we have no idea about this week's menu, however I'm reliably informed there will definitely be bread rolls, bowls of peanuts and bowls of chips available.

++++++

Our old mate IPP Nanu "The Negotiator" Lachman advises us that he's convinced our dear friends at the Holiday Inn Golden Mile to reduce the lunch price by $20 to only $200 per person. Excellent value.

Milestones:

Birthday greetings for:

Nobody this week. Boring.

KGM Induction Anniversary Greetings, go out to:

Nobody this week. Boring with fleas.

Semi-Annual Dues - 4th Reminder:

Yes folks, it's time once again to pay your dues of $1,500 for the period 1 January to 30 June 2004, and you have TWO payment options:

1) By cash handed directly to KGM Treasurer Rajiv "Show Me The Money" Makhija;

2) By cheque payable to "Rotary Club of Kowloon Golden Mile" mailed to P.O. Box 98129, Tsimshatsui, Kowloon.

If you elect to pay by cheque, remember to clearly write your name on the back of the cheque, because our overworked and unpaid Treasurer doesn't always know which company name belongs to which member (other than, say, The Incredible Hunk Limited, which we all know is owned by PP "Hopalong" Cassidy "The Body" Lam).

Also please note that we've cancelled the former "PayPal" facility because most of our members are Internet-impaired. Some members also have a problem with extreme nasal hair (this includes a few male members too).

Fellowship News:

The Phantom wants to cry.

Our old mate Vincent "The Galloping Gourmet" Lam informs us that the next fellowship will still be held at the critically acclaimed Gaia Restaurant (a member of the Va Bene Group), but the date has been changed to Saturday 31 January 2004.

Apparently the owner of Gaia, renown restauranteur Pino Piano will be unavailable on the original date and he really, really wants to attend to us personally, so how can we resist? Full details including the price and the time will appear in next week's issue of the bulletin but, just to whet your appetite, here's a recent description of Gaia:

"Gaia è un elegante ristorante di Hong Kong dove si può gustare una raffinata cucina italiana ed è uno dei pochi dove si può prendere posto anche all'aperto. Possiede anche una cantina ben fornita."

Translation: Good beer & pizza.

2004 Annual Ball:

Yes folks, it's back. The world famous KGM Annual Ball, which was cancelled last year due to SARS, will be held from 7:00 p.m. Saturday 28 February at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.

This year's theme is "Putting On The Ritz" (as in "Ritz Hotel" not "Ritz Crackers"), and tickets remain reasonably priced at $1,200 per head, which gets you an all-inclusive cocktail hour, a typically excellent six course meal from the Grand Hyatt, free wine all evening long, fun contests, fantastic entertainment, dancing until the wee hours of the morning plus dozens of fabulous prizes to be won.

What a great deal - why not organise a table of ten (10) or more for your family, friends and business associates.

And, as usual, The Dictator (who has an electronic "kill switch"), ensures that speeches and other formalities are limited to 12 minutes in total, regardless of how many speakers there are, so you and your guests won't nod off in your soup. Remember our Annual Ball is a "FUN raising" event, not a Rotary Information Seminar.

Chairman of the Annual Ball is once again our old mate and PE2B Elissa "Babushka" Cohen, who can be contacted on telephone 9481 8378.

++++++

Reminder: Members of the Ball Committee are reminded that the next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. this Thursday 15 January, at the usual venue, namely 18th Floor, One International Finance Centre, Central.

District 3450 Events:

Although KGM remains at DEFCON 1, it's all quiet on the western front in respect of the District Election Brouhaha, but there's a Joint President's Meeting this week (where I suspect they actually smoke "Joints" - this may explain "The Munchies" and other phenomena), so we expect to be able to announce full details in next week's bulletin. Brace yourself.

Of course this presumes that President Patricia "Iron Lady" Blair is not beaten to a pulp with Tactical Tulips (Note to self: assign Susie "Madam Lash" Misini and John "The Enforcer" Hirsch to VIP protective detail).

In the meantime, here's what's coming up on the District Calendar (not much, really):
  • District Interact Conference, Saturday 17 January 2004 - details

Rotary Information:

What is the RI Council on Legislation?: In the early days of Rotary, any change in the RI Bylaws or Constitution was proposed and voted upon at the annual convention. As attendance at conventions increased and open discussion became more difficult, a Council on Legislation was created in 1934 as an advisory group to debate and analyze proposals before they were voted on by the convention.

Finally, at the 1970 Atlanta convention, it was decided that the Council on Legislation would actually become the legislative or parliamentary body of Rotary. The council is composed of one delegate from each Rotary district as well as several ex officio members. It was agreed that the council would meet every three years at a site and time other than the RI Convention.

The council has the responsibility of considering and acting upon all “enactments,” which are proposed changes in the Rotary International Bylaws and Constitution and the Standard Rotary Club Constitution, and “resolutions which are recommendations to the RI Board for policy, program, and procedural changes. Proposals may be submitted by any Rotary club, district, or the RI Board. The council’s actions are subject to review by all the Rotary clubs of the world before they become final. If 10 percent of the voting strength of the clubs oppose a council action, such legislation is suspended and it is submitted to all the clubs for a final vote.

The Council on Legislation provides the membership of Rotary with a democratic process for legislative change in the operations of Rotary International.

Geek Speak:

As most of you know, Google is generally considered to be the best Internet "Search Engine" these days, and it's reputation is justified, however unless you're a "power surfer" who knows how to limit the results of a search, the results can be overwhelming.

Enter Vivisimo, however this is not strictly a "search engine" - they describe themselves as a "document clustering engine", whereby they automatically cluster search results into categories that are intelligently selected from the words and phrases contained in the search results themselves.

For example, if you enter "Rotary Hong Kong" into Vivisimo, you'll note they generate "clusters" in the left-hand navigation frame, and this makes it easier to narrow down your search results.

The Phantom uses both Google and Vivisimo to conduct searches of the Internet, and hopefully you'll find this little tip useful for your purposes. Give Vivisimo a try the next time you need to search for something.

Who Am I?

What at is the more common name of former Asian leader Nguyen Sinh Cung?

Clue: He has a city named after him.

The answer appears at the bottom of this issue.

Golden Smile:

Little Johnny and Jenny are only 10 years old, but they just know that they're in love. One day they decide that they want to get married, so Johnny goes to Jenny's father to ask him for her hand.

Johnny bravely walks up to him and says "Sir, Jenny and I are in love and I want to ask you for her hand in marriage."

Thinking that this was the cutest thing ever, Jenny's Dad replies, "Well Johnny, you're only 10 years old. Where will you two live?"

Without even taking a moment to think about it, Johnny replies "In Jenny's room. It's bigger than mine and we can both fit there nicely."

Still thinking this is just adorable, Jenny's Dad says with a huge grin, "Okay then how will you live? You're not old enough to get a job. You'll need to support Jenny."

Again, Johnny instantly replies, "Our allowance. Jenny makes $50 a week and I make $100 a week. That's about $600 a month and that should do us just fine."

By this time Jenny's Dad is a little shocked that Johnny has put so much thought into this. He thinks for a moment trying to come up with a question for which Johnny won't have an answer.

After a few seconds, Jenny's Dad says, "Well Johnny, it seems like you've got everything all figured out. I just have one more question for you. What will you do if you should have little ones of your own?"

Johnny just shrugs his shoulders and says "Well, we've been lucky so far"
