Golden News
Volume 17, Number 26 - Monday 22 December
2003
The official bulletin of the Rotary
Club of Kowloon Golden Mile is published
most Mondays and is distributed to all club members, District officials and other "friends of KGM". Winner "Best English Language Bulletin" in District 3450, 2001/2002 This Week's Meeting:
There's no guest speaker this week because it's our Annual Xmas Party. Our spy at the North Pole, code name "Brown Nose" (apparently he has a problem stopping quickly), tells us that there'll be a visit from Santa, who will be bringing gifts for all the kids. There'll also be gifts for children of KGM members too. Ahem. And, since Wednesday is Christmas Eve, we expect
that the meeting will run longer than usual. Heck, it may run as long
as meetings held while PP M.V. "Rambo"
Ramadasan was President. (e.g start on Wednesday, end
on Friday).
Anyway let's make it a family affair - bring your spouse, your offspring, your staff, your family pet, whatever. Let's end the year with a bang (er, in the "explosive" sense, not in the rumpy-bumpy sense, OK?). ++++++
From Under The
Kitchen Sink: Apparently our spy in the Holiday Inn kitchen, Vincent "The Galloping Gourmet" Lam, has
been too busy sipping eggnog and he's forgotten to give us details of
this week's fare other than to say it's
Xmas Food (Duh!).
Milestones: Birthday greetings on: 23 December to PP Ebe Tung "Che Wow", who shares her birthday with music maestro Quincy "Q" Jones. 26
December to IPP Nanu "Nanu"
Lachman, who shares his birthday with comedian Steve
Allen. ++++++
KGM Induction Anniversary greetings this week go
to:
Brian "Happy Chappy" Hodgson who was
inducted on 23 December 1992 and celebrates his 11th anniversary.
Susie "Madam
Lash" Misini who was inducted on 27 December 2000 and
celebrates her 3rd
anniversary. Prospective New Member:
The Membership
Committee and the Board of Directors has approved the nomination of
Mr. Peter Lam, Executive
General Manager of Chubb Fire, Chubb Hong Kong Limited, for Active
membership in KGM under the classification "Engineer - Fire Protection". The candidate
was nominated for membership in KGM by PP
C.K. Tsang.
Any member who wishes to lodge an objection to this proposal is required to do so in writing to the Club Secretary by email within 7 days from the date of this notice (i.e. on or before 29 December 2003), clearly setting out the reasons for their objection. If no objections are received within the specified period, the candidate may be inducted as Active member of KGM on or after 31 December, 2003, subject to his advance payment of the ruling joining fees and semi-annual dues. KGM Election Results: At the Annual General Meeting
held last week, the following members were elected to serve on the
KGM Board for the Rotary year
commencing 1 July 2004, under
the leadership of incoming President Silva
Yeung and the guidance of half-way-there IPP Patricia
Blair:
President-Elect: Elissa Cohen
Vice-President: David Harilela
Secretary: Mazhar Sultana
Treasurer: Rajiv Makhija
Directors: Clarissa Bellstedt, Carola Chard,
Brian Hodgson, Miranda Kong, IPP Cassidy Lam, Vincent Lam, PP Vince Pinto,
Sonya Wu & Diana Yeung.
Congratulations to those who were elected, and sincere regrets to those who didn't make it this year, in what was a very close election. By the way, the Web Monster, being an efficient (and rather handsome and intelligent, yet modest) sort of chap, has already created email distribution list bod2004@rckgm.org which will reach all of the above members with one click. Semi-Annual Dues - 1st Reminder:
Yes folks, it's time once again
to pay your dues of $1,500 for the period 1
January to 30 June 2004, and you have TWO payment options:
1) By cash handed directly to KGM Treasurer Rajiv "Show Me The Money" Makhija; 2) By cheque payable to "Rotary Club of Kowloon Golden
Mile" mailed to P.O.
Box 98129, Tsimshatsui, Kowloon.
If you elect to pay by cheque, remember to clearly write your name on the back of the cheque,
because our overworked and unpaid Treasurer doesn't always know which
company name belongs to which member (other than Spank Me Limited,
which we all know is owned by Susie "Madam Lash" Misini). Also please note that we've cancelled the former "PayPal" facility because most of our members are Internet-impaired. Some members also have smelly feet. Fellowship News:
Well the rumour we heard last week was wrong. In the latest chapter of the "What the hell are we gonna do for fellowship in January" soap opera, we're reliably informed (Ha!), that the long-awaited "President's Night" to be hosted by former Fearless Leader IPP Nanu "Nanu" Lachman will be deferred until (fill in the blank). The actual January
fellowship has definitely been confirmed as a (fill in the
blank) Night, to be held on (fill in the blank) at (fill in the blank).
Sounds like fun! District 3450 Events:
BREAKING NEWS: Well it looks like the usual District Governor Electoral Nonsense is back (did it ever stop??). No Sir, some things never change. Apparently AG Meggie Tseung of the RC Peninsula Sunrise was elected by "The Committee" to be DG Nominee (ultimately to serve as District Governor for the Rotary year 2005/2006), but a bunch of people are unhappy with that nomination, and they plan to issue a "challenge". If the challenge is issued within the time limits, this means that each club will vote for their preferred candidate, and that decision is not subject to appeal. Why do they bother having a
committee in the first place, if the great unwashed masses
are not going to accept it's recommendation? The whole system is puerile,
self-serving and political, and it's one of the many reasons why The
Phantom has zero respect or tolerance for the District structure and
administration.
It doesn't work, it never will work, so why the hell do we keep flogging the same dead horse? The District is either competing with clubs, trying to raise money for worthless monuments or running around like a headless chicken. And the so-called "Rotarians" (Ha!) involved with this electoral nonsense should be ashamed of themselves but if they're not, don't worry - I feel enough shame for all of them. I'm disgusted. Rotary

Rotary Information: Membership in Rotary International: If you asked a Rotarian if he or she belonged to Rotary International, the individual probably would look puzzled and answer, “Of course I’m a member of Rotary International:’ But in this instance, the confident Rotarian would be technically wrong. No Rotarian can be a member of Rotary International. The explanation of this apparent
contradiction is simple. The constitutional documents of RI state that
membership in Rotary International is limited to Rotary clubs. More than
31,000 Rotary clubs belong to the organization we call Rotary
International.
A Rotary club is composed of persons with
the appropriate qualifications of good character and reputation and a
business or professional classification and who serve in an executive or
managerial capacity. The Rotarian belongs to a club - the club belongs to
Rotary International. This technical distinction is not obvious or even
known to most Rotarians and seldom does it create any problems or
complications. It does explain, however, why the Rotary International
Board of Directors places expectations upon and extends privileges to
Rotary clubs, rather than to individual Rotarians.
So, if someone asks if you belong to
Rotary International, your most accurate answer would be, “No, I belong to
a Rotary club?".

Digital Photography: Many KGM members take digital photographs of KGM Fellowship and other events, however they use camera settings far in excess of what's required for publication on the KGM website. Unless you plan to actually printout the photographs, you should not use the highest resolution offered on your camera. Most digital cameras on the market these days offer "2 Megapixel" resolution, which usually means they can take images as large as 1600 x 1200 pixels. However there are other model digital cameras which offer +3 Megapixels resolution, and these can take images as large as 2048 x 1536 pixels or more, but this makes every image well over 1 megabyte in size. This not only makes the images slower to email to others, it also makes loading on a website painfully slow, even with a broadband connection. If you're taking digital photographs for a website,
adjust your camera settings to 640 x 480
pixels before you take the photos, or use the lowest
numbers above those available on your camera.
Who Am I?
What is the more common name of American actress Demetria Gene Guynes? Clue: Married to Walter Willison :-) The answer appears at the bottom of this issue. Golden Smile: Q: What do you get when you cross an onion with a donkey? A: Most of the time you just get an onion with long ears but, every once in a while you get lucky, and you get a piece of ass that brings tears to your eyes. Quotable Quotes:
"My choice early in life was either to be a piano-player in a whorehouse or a politician. And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference". Harry S. Truman
