Golden News
Volume 17, Number 21 - Monday 17 November
2003
The official bulletin of the Rotary
Club of Kowloon Golden Mile is published
most Mondays and is distributed to all club members, District officials and other "friends of KGM". Winner "Best English Language Bulletin" in District 3450, 2001/2002 This Week's Meeting:
Our guest speaker this week is Dr. Charles Chan and the subject of his talk is "Stress Management". Unfortunately we've not been given any biographical information about this speaker. From Under The
Kitchen Sink: Apparently our spy in the
Holiday Inn kitchen, Vincent "The Galloping
Gourmet" Lam, has been gorging himself again on
cheesecake, and he's forgotten to tell us what's on the menu
this week. Hence you better bring your own lunch, just in case the main
course is Pickled Sheep's Eyes.
And, golly-gee, it's really so much fun
being Bulletin Editor when nobody tells you anything.
BOD Meeting - Tonight:
Members of the KGM Board are reminded that the next BOD
meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m., Monday 17 November 2003, at the conference
room on the 2nd floor of the Holiday Inn Golden Mile.
If you can't attend, please
call KGM President Patricia "Iron Lady" Blair on 9312
3606 or KGM Secretary Clarissa
"The Enforcer" Bellstedt on 9400 8261 or send them
both an email
as soon as possible.
BOD members who don't attend will be sent to The Tower and shot. Twice. You have been warned. Milestones: Birthday greetings to: Chris "Binary
Boy" Carroll who, on 17 November, shares his birthday with
diminutive actor/producer/director Danny DeVito.
PP Raju "Pssst. Wanna buy a suit?" Daswani who, on 20 November, shares his birthday with sex kitten Bo Derek (even the East German judge gave her a 10). Nasreen
"Who?" Ting who, on 23 November, shares her birthday with
American outlaw Billy The Kid. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Induction anniversary greetings to:
Nobody, because there are no KGM members celebrating an
anniversary this
week. Prospective New Member: The Membership
Committee and the Board of Directors has approved the nomination of
Mr. Ted Durham, General
Manager of the Holiday Inn Golden Mile, for Active membership in KGM under
the classification "Hotel - Management". The candidate was nominated for
membership in KGM by PDG Dipo
Sani.
Any member who wishes to lodge an objection to this proposal is required to do so in writing to the Club Secretary by email within 7 days from the date of this notice (i.e. on or before 24 November 2003), clearly setting out the reasons for their objection. If no objections are received within the specified period, the candidate may be inducted as Active member of KGM on or after 26 November, 2003, subject to his advance payment of the ruling joining fees and semi-annual dues. Fellowship News:
Keeping with our usual theme of "Let's keep the Bulletin Editor in the dark, so he has to make stuff up", we were just advised that there will only be one fellowship event in the month of December, not two events as advised in last week's Bullsh...,er, Bulletin. God I love this job. Anyway, our old mate and KGM Fellowship Director
PP "Butch" Cassidy
Lam confirms that on Friday 12 December, the charming
& beautiful Avisha
Harilela and her hubbie er, um, ah, oh
yeah David, will once
again graciously open their home to the great unwashed KGM masses for a
fellowship dinner tentatively entitled "A Short Time In Kowloon Tong",
whatever that means.
Members interested in attending this event should contact PP Cassidy on 9031 2882 or send him an email.
Oh yeah, the other event mentioned last week, namely
our former Fearless Leader IPP Nanu "Nanu"
Lachman's "President's
Night", will be held sometime in January. Or maybe in
February.
Or maybe in ................. oh never mind.
Whatever.
International Service News:
Yes folks, the "on again, off again, on again, off again" visit to Manila is "on again", and we hope the date has not changed since last week. Anyway the delegation, lead by our resident Bee Gee and
International Service Director David "Cares"
Harilela, will now depart for Manila on Saturday 22 November and will return
on Monday 24 November..
The object of the visit is to renew the "Sister
Club" ties with the RC
Paranaque, and to discuss the progress of
their "Cleft Lip &
Palate" corrective surgery program, which KGM has
been financially supporting since 1990. They also want to try some
Filipino "Balut". Yummy.
Dashing David has organised a package deal of $2,330
per head, which includes economy class airfare, twin share
accommodation and breakfast at the 5-Star Intercontinental Hotel in
Makati. An additional fee of $560 per head is payable by those requiring
their own room because they snore excessively.
Members interested in joining the delegation should
contact David by telephone on 9168
8333 like, today dude!

International News:
November is Rotary
Foundation Month, so it's time for KGM members (especially
those who've been members for many years, but who've not yet become a Paul
Harris Fellow), to contribute to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary
International.
And there's no need to make a single lump-sum
contribution of US$1,000 - members can elect to become "Sustaining
Members" by making an initial contribution of only US$100. Stop making excuses and support The Rotary
Foundation.

Rotary Information: What is an Interact Club?: Interact, a Rotary-sponsored youth service club, was launched by the RI Board of Directors in 1962. The first Interact club was established by the Rotary Club of Melbourne, Florida, USA. Interact clubs provide opportunities for young people of secondary school age to work together in a world fellowship of service and international understanding. The term “Interact” is derived from “inter" for international, and “act” for action. Every Interact club must be sponsored and supervised by a Rotary club and must plan annual projects of service to its school, community, and the world. Today, there are more than 8,600 Interact clubs with about 200,000 members in some 110 countries. Interactors develop skills in leadership and attain practical experience in conducting service projects, thereby learning the satisfaction that comes from serving others. A major goal of Interact is to provide opportunities for young people to create greater understanding and goodwill with youth throughout the world. KGM has sponsored two such clubs in Hong Kong: the Interact Club of Ying Wah College and the Interact Club of Ying Wah Girl's School. Advice
from the Geek - Reminder:
Did you update your Anti-Virus software this week? What about last week? And will you do it next week? New and increasingly damaging viruses,
worms and various other electronic nasties continue to be propagated
around the Internet every day, and the greatest source of these is email.
Some of these nasties are so bad that, even if you don't click on them,
they can still cause irreparable harm to your personal computer or, worst
still, your entire computer network, just by downloading
them.
However if your Anti-Virus software is up-to-date, most nasties can be caught and destroyed before they are downloaded. Most top software programs such as
Norton Anti-Virus (which The
Geek uses and highly recommends) allows you set your software to
automatically check for updates in the background each time you log-on to
the Internet, and this saves you from having to remember to do
so.
Update your Anti-Virus software NOW, before it's too late. Who Am I?
What is the more common name of American action-comedy actor Walter Willison? Clue: Live Softly. The answer appears at the bottom of this issue. Golden Smile: LA Lakers manager Tom Ludwig sends talent scouts round the world looking for exciting new players for the team. One of his scouts informs him of a young Iraqi player who he thinks will turn out to be a true superstar, so Tom flies to Iraq to watch him play. He's suitably impressed and arranges for him to come to Los Angeles. Two weeks later the Lakers are losing in a big way to
the Chicago Bulls, with only a few minutes left to play, so Ludwig sends
the young Iraqi on to replace Kobe Bryant.
The Iraqi player is an absolute sensation, and scores a
series of 3 point shots to win the game for the Lakers. The fans are
delighted, the players and coaches are delighted and the media loves the
new star. When he gets to the dressing room, he phones his Mom to tell her
about his first day playing with the NBA.
"Hi Mom, guess what?" he says. "I only played for 10
minutes today, we were losing in a big way to the Chicago Bulls, but I
scored a bunch of 3 point shots and we won the game. Everybody loves me -
the owners, the managers, the fans, the players and the media. They all
love me".
"Well that's great, son," says his Mom, "but let me
tell you about my day. While you were having a great time, your father was
shot on the way to work, your sister and I were accosted and almost raped
in the street, your Uncle's home was burgled, your car was
stolen from the front of the house and your brother joined a gang of
looters".
The young Iraqi is very upset and says: "What can I say
Mum? I'm so very, very sorry".
"Sorry?" says his Mom angrily, "It's your damned fault
that we moved to Los Angeles in the first place!"
