Golden News
Volume 17, Number 12 - Monday 15 September
2003
The official bulletin of the Rotary
Club of Kowloon Golden Mile is published
most Mondays and is distributed to all club members, District officials and other "friends of KGM". Winner "Best English Language Bulletin" in District 3450, 2001/2002 This Week's Meeting:
Our guest speaker this week is Mr. David Dumigan, and the topic of his presentation is "Two International Finance Centre". Milestones: There are no KGM members celebrating a
birthday this week.
There are no KGM members celebrating an
induction anniversary this week.
Ho-hum.
Fellowship News:
Our old mate and KGM Fellowship Director PP "Butch" Cassidy Lam apparently likes to keep us all in suspense (or is that suspenders?), because he really doesn't give us much notice about upcoming fellowships events. Bad Butch. Anyway this month's fellowship will be held from 7:00
p.m. on Saturday 20
September (that's this week,
folks!), at the Sijie Sichuan Dishes Restaurant (huh ?),
2/F Kowa Building, 289 Lockhart Road, Wanchai (Tel: 2802 2250).
The cost is a very reasonable $200 per head and this
includes a delicious selection of hot 'n' spicy food, with an unlimited
supply of beer and soft drinks to help cool down your burning
palate.
Members interested in attending should contact PP Cassidy by telephone on 9031 2883
ASAP.
Membership News: KGM's lovely and talented Membership Director
Sonya "Good on ya" Wu has
launched a "Member-Get-Member"
campaign to encourage members to introduce new blood into KGM.
Check out the promotional
poster then download a referral
form then go find some new members, OK?
By the way, did you know that our old
mate PDG Dipo "Shaq"
Sani is District 3450 Membership Development
Chairman this year?
Well he is, dude, and the first thing he did was
to initiate a Past Presidents Membership
Challenge, details of which are available on the
District website.
And if you want to see PDG Dipo and Sonya in action together (yeee-haaaaaa!), attend the Membership Development seminar this Saturday. See below for more information. District 3450 News:

Rotary Information: Was Paul Harris the first president of a Rotary club? No. Was Paul Harris the first president of Rotary International? Yes. There is an easy explanation to this apparent contradiction. Although Paul Harris was the founder and organizer of the first Rotary club in Chicago in 1905, the man selected to be the first president was one of the other founding members, Sylvester Schiele. By the year 1910 there were 16 Rotary clubs, which linked up as an organization called the National Association of Rotary Clubs. A couple of years later the name was changed to International Association of Rotary Clubs as Rotary was organized in Winnipeg, Canada, and then in England, Ireland and Scotland. In 1922 the name was shortened to Rotary International. When the first organization of Rotary clubs was created in 1910, Paul Harris was selected as the first president. He served in this position for two years, from 1910 until 1912. Thus, the founder of the Rotary idea, who declined to be president of the first club, became the first president of the worldwide organization, Rotary International. Ask The
Geek:
The Geek is on leave this week. Who Am I?
What is the more common name of perfume and cosmetics mogul Josephine Esther Mentzer? Clue: Speak up. The answer appears at the bottom of this issue. Golden Smile: On their way to a church to get married, a couple had a fatal car accident. They soon found themselves sitting outside the Pearly Gates waiting for St. Peter. While they were waiting, they wondered whether they could get married in Heaven. When St. Peter finally arrived, they asked
him.
St. Peter replied, "I don't know because this is the first
time anyone has asked that question. Let me go find out."
The couple sat and waited for an answer. However a couple
of months passed and they began to wonder if they really should get
married in Heaven, given the eternal aspect of it
all.
"What if it doesn't work?" they wondered,
"Are we stuck together forever?"
Finally, after 6 months, St. Peter returned and,
looking somewhat bedraggled, he said "Yes, you can get married in
Heaven".
"That's great," said the couple, "but what if things
don't work out? Could we also get a divorce in Heaven?"
St. Peter, red-faced, slammed his clipboard onto the
ground.
"What's wrong?", asked the frightened couple.
"COME ON!" St. Peter shouted, "It took me three months
to find a priest up here! Do you have any idea how long it will take me to
find a lawyer?"
