Golden News
Volume 17, Number 2 - Monday 14 July
2003
The official bulletin of the Rotary Club of Kowloon
Golden Mile is published
most Mondays and is distributed to all club members, District officials and other "friends of KGM". Winner "Best English Language Bulletin" in District 3450, 2001/2002 This Week's Meeting:
Our guest speaker this week is Ms. Cecilia Yeung, and the topic of her presentation is "Rapport Through Quality Communication". Milestones: Happy
Anniversary to KGM Rotary Foundation Director Carola "Cha Cha"
Chard, who was inducted into KGM on 15 July 1992, and who
therefore celebrates 11 years of service to
Rotary.
++++++++++ There are no KGM Members celebrating a birthday this week. Welcome: A warm KGM welcome to our newest member, Police Senior Superintendent Anthony Wong,
who was inducted as an Active Member of KGM under the classification
"Police - Human Resources" at the District 3450 Installation Ball and Mass
Korean Wedding on 4 July
2003.
If
you've not already done so, please introduce yourself to Anthony, and make
him feel welcome. By the way, please don't ask him about fixing your
parking tickets, OK?
Let's give him a month or two to settle in to the club first :-) Prospective New Member: The Membership Committee and
the Board of Directors has approved the nomination of Ms. Sharon P.W. Cheung, a Senior Reporter
with the Cable News Channel of Hong Kong Cable Television Limited, for
Active membership in KGM under the classification "Journalist - Television".
Any club member who wishes to lodge an objection to this proposal is required to do so in writing to the Club Secretary by email within 7 days from the date of this notice (i.e. on or before 21 July 2003), setting out the reasons for their objection. If no objections are received within the specified period, the candidate may be inducted as Active member of KGM on or after 23 July, 2003, subject to her advance payment of the ruling joining fees and semi-annual dues. Member Updates: (1) KGM International Service Director David "Cares" Harilela tells us that he received three, count 'em, three awards at the District Installation Ball and Mass Korean Wedding held on 4 July 2003 at the HKCEC. The awards were:
Despite David's comparatively short tenure at KGM, it's clear that
he's making his presence felt throughout the District.
(2) KGM Treasurer Rajiv "Show Me The Money" Makhija advises that his revised email address is rajiv.makhija@hk.ey.com Note the former letter "i" has been deleted after "ey".
BOD Meeting: Members of the new KGM Board
are reminded that the first BOD meeting of the 2003/2004 Rotary year
will be held 6:30 p.m. on Monday 21 July
2003, at the usual venue, namely the conference room on
the 2nd floor of the Holiday Inn Golden Mile.
If you can't attend,
call KGM President Patricia "Iron Lady"
Blair on 9312 3606 or KGM
Secretary Clarissa "The Enforcer" Bellstedt on 9400
8261 or send them both an email as soon as
possible.
If you don't, with these two extremely lovely ladies in charge, you'll probably be sent to The Tower and then shot. Fellowship News:
Judging by the photos submitted by reporters Thomas "Eenie, Meenie, Mynie" Mo and Tim "The Flash" Wong, the NINC Night held last Saturday at the Milano Restaurant was a roaring success. Special thanks must go to
Head NINC Brian "Do you want to be a Rupiah
millionaire?" Hodgson, who organised the venue and most of
the activities for the evening. I also note from the pornographic, er,
photographic evidence that Brian was ably supported by two mysterious
blonde bombshells, who looked remarkably like Susie "Madam Lash" Misini and Carola "Madam Cash" Chard.
Yours truly would also like to take this
opportunity to sincerely apologise for his inability to attend because
Mrs. Phantom was, as they say in Australia, "Crook As Tobruk" (or, as they
say in the Philippines "Damn, I think those Balut were Raptor eggs from
the Jurassic Period").
Mrs. Phantom was an interesting shade of green for most of Saturday and she spent most of the day, er, inspecting our plumbing. She didn't really improve until late Sunday, but she's fine now and back to her usual self (i.e. beating me up). Anyway, standby for an
announcement shortly from KGM Fellowship
Director "Butch" Cassidy Lam concerning the fellowship for
August.
District 3450 News:

Kingspark Hongkong.
These applications are currently being processed by the Committee, which expects that the new clubs will be officially admitted into Rotary International in August. .

Rotary Information: Women In
Rotary: Until 1989, the Constitution and Bylaws of
Rotary International stated that Rotary club membership was for males
only. In 1978 the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, invited three women
to become members.
The RI board withdrew the charter of that club for
violation of the RI Constitution. The club brought suit against RI
claiming a violation of a state civil rights law which prevents
discrimination of any form in business establishments or public
accommodations.
The appeals court and the California Supreme Court
supported the Duarte position that Rotary could not remove the club's
charter merely for inducting women into the club. The United States
Supreme Court upheld the California court indicating that Rotary clubs do
have a "business purpose" and are in some ways public-type organizations.
This action in 1987 allowed women to become Rotarians in any jurisdiction
having similar "public accommodation" statutes.
The RI constitutional change was made at the 1989
Council on Legislation, with a vote to eliminate the "male only" provision
for all of Rotary.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++ Editor's note: Hmmm. Not very sporting of RI back then, now was it? Then again, there are a few Rotary Clubs in District 3450, run by dinosaurs, which still don't admit women. Shame on them! .
Ask The
Geek:
The Geek, who is supposed to be helping the Web Monster update the KGM Website after the Changing of the Guard, apologises for being what is affectionately known in Australia as "A Lazy Bugger". Actually, the truth be known, he's been up to his web-cams working on a complex project for the past 6 months, and the last 2 weeks have been extremely intense as the project is (finally) winding down. Anyway, he's promised to extract his
floppy disk drive this week, so the KGM Website should be fully updated by
Friday.
Grumpy
grumbles:
Don't you just hate the way some people love to throw their limbs into the almost closed doors of the MTR, then feign indignation at being pinned like a slice of pressed chicken? Who Am
I?
What is the more common name
of singer/songwriter Barry Alan
Pincus?
Clue: He shares a certain feature with the late Jimmy Durante. The answer appears at the bottom of this issue. Golden Smile: Three Little
Piggies went out to dinner one night. When a waiter asks to take
their drink orders, he's told:
"I would like a Sprite," said
the first little piggy.
"I would like a Coke," said the second little piggy. "I want water. Lots and lots of water," said the third little piggy. After the drinks are brought
out, the waiter takes their orders for dinner.
"I want a nice big steak and
a baked potato," said the first piggy.
"I would like the smoked salmon salad plate," said the second piggy. "I want water. Lots and lots of water," said the third little piggy. The meals were brought out
and, a while later, the waiter approached the table and asked if the
piggies would like any dessert.
"I want a big banana split,"
said the first piggy.
"I want a large slice of cheesecake," said the second piggy. "I want water. Lots and lots of water," said the third little piggy. "Pardon me for asking," said
the waiter to the third little piggy, "but why have you only ordered water
all evening?"
The third piggy says
