Golden News
Volume 15, Number 52 - Monday 24 June 2002
The official bulletin of the Rotary Club of Kowloon Golden Mile is published
every Monday and is distributed to all club members, District officials and many other "friends of KGM". Winner "Best English Club Bulletin" in District 3450, 2001/2002
Conspiracy Theory:
What another exciting week of World Cup fever. The American team did very well to reach the quarter-finals, but
they were eventually beaten by a stronger German team. Rumour has it that the German victory had more to do with the beer they drink than anything else.
My spies tell me that former KGM member Hans "I know nothing" Peter was seen in Stanley, shortly after the game, wearing industrial-strength lederhosen and singing "Deutschland uber alles" which, when translated, means "I'm a silly sausage and I can't find my shoes".
Of course the biggest upset in a competition full of upsets was when the Korean team defeated Italy, who immediately declared war on Korea because of the
"pro-Korean conspiracy". When asked whether the Italians had overreacted, the Italian coach replied with something that sounded like "Bar-Fungus-Coolio",
whatever that means.
Meanwhile, back in the Cable TV studios, the presenters (one of whom is pictured at left), continued to look and sound like absolute morons. I mean it's one thing to get excited by a shot at goal or a fantastic save, but to have seven people scream out "Waaaaaa, ho bor" after a goal kick is a bit much. Thank God for mute buttons.
Anyway, the World Cup is nearly over, so I guess it's time for a Phantom prediction. Although I will be supporting our German KGM members and cheering for
Germany, I predict Brazil will defeat Germany by 1 goal to nil.
Why? Although the Germans have slightly better ball handling skills, nobody can samba like the Brazilians.
This Week's Meeting:
Our speaker this week is Mr. Raymond Lo, and the topic of his presentation is "Fung Shui - What's in the stars?".
Milestones:
This week we have three Past Presidents celebrating birthdays:
23 June - PP Bryan Van Dale who shares his birthday with King Edward VIII, the monarch who
embarrassed his countrymen and caused a major furor by abdicating the British throne to marry two-time divorcee Mrs. Wallis Simpson.
25 June - PP C.K. "Calvin" Tsang who shares his birthday with British rocker George
Michael.
27 June - IPP "Hopalong" Cassidy Lam who shares his birthday with diminutive American
Billionaire H.Ross Perot, who formed the third largest political party in the USA after the Republicans and Democrats.
Member Updates: Our favorite Irish legal eagle Liam "Blarney Stone" Drake advises members that his latest email address is wdrake@netvigator.com. We can only hope that this one lasts longer than the last one he advised us only a few weeks ago. Community Service News:
Incoming Community Service Director Diana "The Red Baron" Chou advises members that our first "hands-on" community
service project for the new year will be the "Free Medical Check Service For the Elderly", an event which has been highly
successful for the past few years.
This year's event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday 7 July 2002 at the Wai Ji Christian Sheltered Workshop, 1/F Un
Hong House, Un Chou Street Estate, Sham Shui Po, Kowloon (the same venue as last year). This event is manned by medical volunteers from St. Paul's Hospital and KGM members
only need to assist as ushers and in other non-medical ways.
Members (and their families) who are willing and able to lend a hand at this worthwhile event are asked to contact Diana by email.
Fellowship News - Last Call:
KGM Fellowship Director David "Party Dude" Harilela reminds members that our next regular fellowship will be the traditional NINC Night, once again organised and generously hosted by our NINC (Non Indian, Non Chinese) members (a.k.a. The Gwai Lo's).
The event will be held at 7:30 p.m., Saturday 29 June 2002 at the "Cococabana Restaurant", Mo Tat Wan, Lamma Island. The restaurant specialises in serving Mediterranean food, washed down with copious quantities of Sangria. Ole!
Members who prefer not to swim to Lamma are advised to meet at the Aberdeen Fish Market at 6:30 p.m. to catch the ferry departing at 6:45 p.m. The ferry ride takes about 20 minutes, followed by a brisk 3 minute walk to the restaurant. Paramedics will be standing by with oxygen. Those members who survive the gruelling walk can, encouraged by the live band, demonstrate their Salsa skills to those, like me, who will be receiving medical attention.
If you plan to attend this event, please contact KGM Vice-President Patricia "Iron Lady" Blair (no
relation to Tony) by email.
Wine Sale:
Our favorite purveyor of alcoholic beverages, Elissa "Corky" Cohen, advises that she has a few
cases of red and white wine leftover from the last Annual Ball, which she will sell for only HK$60 per bottle, with all proceeds going towards her rehabilitation from alcohol
dependency.
Correction: The proceeds will go to our Community Service fund!
Members interested in purchasing some nice plonk, in minimum quantities of six (6) bottles per order, are asked to contact Elissa by email, before she drinks it all.

Web Side Story:
Did you ever see a flag and wonder which country it represents? If so, visit the Flag
Detective Website.
This website offers you a really simple way to determine which flag represents which country. You simply click on the basic design from the left-hand frame, then the various choices will immediately appear in the right-hand column. Cool. ++++++++++
Did you ever want a personalised car number plate (like the one at left), but you simply couldn't afford to buy one at auction?
If so, visit the Acme License Maker website and make your own! Dear Geek:
The Geek is on leave this week.
Who Am I?
What is the more common name of Irish rock singer Paul David Hewson?
The answer appears at the bottom of this issue.
Cunning Linguist:
Are you curious about the origins of the term "Roger" ?
Who is Roger, and why is he always out? Usage of Roger in
radio transmissions dates to World War II. Roger was the word in the phonetic alphabet that stood for the letter R and was an abbreviation for received. It eventually became radiospeak for "OK"
or "I understand".
Modern soldiers are rightly confused by the origin of "Roger" because the current phonetic alphabet used by the military for "R"
is "Romeo", but old habits die hard.
Did you ever wonder why...
Woman always apply mascara with their mouths open?
Golden Smile:
A woman boards a bus holding a baby. The bus driver says, "That's the ugliest baby I've ever seen!"
Mad as a hornet, the woman slammed her money into the fare box and took an aisle seat near the rear of the bus. The man seated next to her sensed that she was agitated and asked her what was wrong. "The bus driver insulted me," she fumed. The man sympathised and said: "Why, he's a public servant and shouldn't say things to insult passengers." "You're right" she said. "I think I'll go back up there and give him a piece of my mind." "That's a good idea" the man said. "Here, let me hold your monkey.".
Quotable Quotes:
"I knew I was an unwanted baby when I realised that my bath toys were a toaster and a hairdryer".
