Golden News
Volume 15, Number 49 - Monday 3 June 2002
The official bulletin of the Rotary Club of Kowloon Golden Mile is published
every Monday and is distributed to all club members, District officials and many other "friends of KGM". Winner "Best English Club Bulletin" in District 3450, 2001/2002
Que Pasa?:
Well, I missed yet another regular club meeting last week, but it seems nobody missed me. You guys never call, you never write, you never send me beer
and pizza (double anchovy, hold the pineapple).
Sure, I get lots of emails from you but, hey, I need a hug sometimes, OK? Anyway my absence is due to the fact that I've been totally inundated with overseas visitors over the past two weeks, and I've been up to my bazoonka in meetings and presentations. Sure, this is all good stuff, but all work and no play makes the Phantom grumpy, and we have enough of that already with a grumpy Treasurer and a grumpy Web Monster. So, what are you waiting for? Send pizza. NOW!
This Week's Meeting:
Our speaker this week is Ms. Julia Byrne, and the topic of her presentation is "Introduction to Art Therapy". Personally I think sex therapy is far more exciting, especially if you consider our Golden Smile this week!
Milestones:
Birthday greetings on:
Saturday 8 June to June "December" Liau, who shares her birthday with former US First Lady Barbara Bush, the dear old Mom of incumbent US President Gee Dubya Bush.
Sunday 9 June to Treasurer PP Vince "Grumpy" Pinto, who shares his birthday with Canadian actor Michael J. Fox, star of the "Back to the Future" series and many other movies. Member Updates:
There are no member updates this week. Gee, you guys are a boring lot!
Fellowship News:
KGM Fellowship Director David "Party Dude" Harilela informs members that our next regular fellowship will be the traditional NINC Night, once again generously hosted by our NINC (Non Indian, Non Chinese) members (a.k.a. The Gwai Lo's).
The event will be held at 7:30 p.m., Saturday 29 June 2002 at the "Cococabana Restaurant", Mo Tat Wan, Lamma Island. Apparently the restaurant specialises in serving Mediterranean food, washed down with copious quantities of Sangria. Ole!
Members who prefer not to swim to Lamma are advised to meet at the Aberdeen Fish Market at 6:30 p.m. to catch the ferry departing at 6:45 p.m. The ferry ride takes about 20 minutes, followed by a brisk 3 minute walk to the restaurant. Paramedics will be standing by with oxygen. Those members who survive the gruelling walk can, encouraged by the live band, demonstrate their Salsa skills to those, like me, who will be receiving medical attention.
If you plan to attend this event, please contact KGM Vice-President Patricia "Iron Lady" Blair (no
relation to Tony) by email.
District 3450 News:
1) ROTARY TELEVISION DOCUMENTARY (Last Call):
The TVB Jade documentary entitled "Walk Along With Rotary", which was originally scheduled for 19 May, has now been rescheduled for broadcast from 9:00 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. on Sunday 9 June 2002. The KGM Board, in a moment of weakness (Grumpy was absent), committed $10,000 of member's funds towards the production of this documentary, and we presume all other clubs in District 3450 did likewise. Let's hope it's a decent documentary otherwise we'll never hear the end of it from Grumpy.

2) DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT (Last Call):
This will be held from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday &
Sunday 8-9 June 2002 at the Cornwall Street Indoor Recreation Centre, Kowloon Tong.
Members interested in forming a team should contact President Ebe by email. ++++++++++
3) 2002/2003 DISTRICT INSTALLATION (Reminder):
This will be held from 6:00 p.m., Thursday 4 July 2002 at the HKCEC, Wanchai
North.
This is when the "old guard" (DG Johnson Chu & Co.), hands over the District reigns to the
"young Turks" (DGE Gloria Chan & Co.), who intend to "Sow The Seeds Of
Love" during 2002/2003. We certainly hope DGE Gloria and her colleagues practice "Safe
Sowing". Ahem.
This event is also when our District, inspired by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon and his mass Korean weddings,
perform a mass induction of all incoming Club Presidents. Sadly though, there are never enough women but,
surprisingly, this doesn't seem to bother our incoming Fearless Leader PE Nanu Lachman. Hmmm.
Anyway, tickets are priced at $550 per head, however tables of 12 persons paid on or before 31 May, will
only need to pay a total of $6,000 thereby enjoying a 10% discount. What a deal!
Members interested in attending this event should contact PE Nanu Lachman by telephone
on 9025 6699 or by email, however I fully
expect PE Nanu will be actively trying to recruit unsuspecting volunteers to witness his Rotary "bar mitzvah". Mazal-tov !
Rotary International News:
1) The RI Annual Convention (Last call):
This will be held from 23 to 26 June 2002 in Barcelona, Spain, and you can register on-line here.
For more information about the convention, visit their web site! Comedian Jerry Lewis and former Soviet leader and Nobel Laureate Mikhail Gorbachev will be attending the RI Convention, and both gentleman will be presented with the RI Award of
Honour.
++++++++++
2) The RI Presidential Conference of Peace & Development will be held from Friday to Sunday, 9-11 August 2002 at the Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel, Malaysia.
Web Side Story:
Well folks, the Web Monster is still in town and he's still on broadband. Hence any KGM members who have photographs from KGM fellowships are invited to send them to him by email.
Like, did anybody take any photos during the last Indian Night? Hello? HELLO?? Dear Geek:
The Geek is on leave this week so, whatever you do, don't touch your computer. You'll just break
something!
Who Am I?
What is the more common name of American actress Margaret Mary Emily Anne
Hyra?
The answer appears at the bottom of this issue.
Cunning Linguist:
Are you curious about the origins of the term "Booze" ?
Some Americans claim this term for liquor comes from a Philadelphia distiller named E.C. Booz
who prospered around 1840 by selling a popular spirit in bottles shaped like a log cabin. The Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang records a cite of Benjamin
Franklin using the term boozy from 1722, and Webster's 1828 dictionary has entries for boose
and bouse meaning "to drink hard; to guzzle".
However the word has actually been around since the 14th century and it derives from the Middle Dutch verb "busen", meaning to drink heavily. It first appeared in English as a verb spelled bouse.
Did you ever wonder why...
If man evolved from apes, why do we still have apes ?
Golden Smile:
A man takes his wife to a Trade Fair, and one of the exhibits contains nothing but breeding bulls. At the first stall, there is a sign which
says: This Bull mated 50 times last year.
The wife pokes her husband in the ribs and says: "He mated 50 times last year. That's almost once a week!"
After walking a bit further, they find another stall with a sign: This Bull mated 150 times last year.
The wife hits her husband and says: "That's more than twice a week! You could learn a lot from him."
At the end of the hall, they arrive at another stall with a sign: This Bull mated 365 times last year.
This time the wife gets really excited and says: "Wow. What a stud. That's once a day. You could really learn something from this bull."
The husband looks at her and says: "Go ask him whether it was with the same cow."
Quotable Quotes:
"Somewhere on this globe, every 10 seconds, there is a woman giving birth to a child. She must be found and stopped."
