Winner "Best English Club Bulletin" in District 3450, 2001/2002

Wassup?:

Well, once again I missed last week's regular club meeting and, once again, nobody bothered to send me any of the grizzly details, so I have no idea what transpired.

Just call me "mushroom". You know: kept in the dark and fed on bovine doo-doo. Such is the life of a Bulletin Editor ....... nobody calls, nobody writes, nobody sends me cold beer and hot women!

Anyway this is my second attempt at this week's issue of the Golden News because my first attempt disappeared into electron limbo. Apparently there is a known bug with Outlook Express and, for those of you who may be interested, details are available here.

I was feeling rather cross with my hero Bill Gates after this frustrating incident and I even resorted to calling him a, um, "matronly rapist" under my breath. However after I heard the news about the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (see below), I reverted to being his biggest fan.

I just wish the doo-doo wouldn't hit it so often ..........

This Week's Meeting:

Our speakers this week are Dr. Lesley Lewis & Dr. Jennifer Walker, and the topic of their presentation is "Stress Management".

Gee, I certainly hope the Web Monster attends. He desperately needs help.

Milestones:

1) Past District Governor (1961-62) Sir Kenneth Fung Ping-Fan, passed away peacefully at Adventist Hospital, Hong Kong, on Thursday 16 May 2002 at the age of 92.

A funeral service will take place at the Hong Kong Funeral Home, North Point, on Friday 24 May, and a memorial service will be held on Saturday 25 May at St. John's Cathedral, Central.

2) There are no KGM members celebrating birthdays this week.

Vocational Service - Neerja Sujanani.

Receipts (Part Deux):

Further to his announcement last week, our grumpy Treasurer PP Vince "Gimme a damn invoice, not an email" Pinto, would like to make an important correction.

The KGM Community Service Fund cannot issue receipts for contributions made in respect of becoming a Paul Harris Fellow, because those funds are sent directly to the Rotary Foundation.

While it is possible that such contributions do qualify as legitimate tax deductions, members who require evidence of their contributions for tax purposes should email Rotary Foundation Director Miranda "King" Kong, who will be absolutely delighted to contact the Rotary Foundation to request a receipt.

Fellowship News (Last call):

KGM Fellowship Director David "Party Dude" Harilela reminds members that our next regular fellowship will be the traditional Indian Night, once again generously hosted by our Indian members.  Cowboys are nonetheless welcome!

The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. (Indian Time), on Saturday 25 May 2002 at the "Viceroy of India" restaurant, Sun Hung Kai Centre, Wanchai North. Bring your dancing shoes. And a candy bar, for nourishment, in the highly unlikely event that an Indian function starts late. Yeah, right!

Members who plan to attend this fellowship are asked to contact David's efficient Secretary "Amazing" Grace by email.

Note: As the Web Monster will be unable to attend the Indian Night, would somebody please take some digital photos and send them to him after the event.

District 3450 News:

1) ROTARY CLUB OF KHUREE (Last call):

A Charter Night has been scheduled for 28 May 2002 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Any member interested in joining DG Johnson Chu and the District delegation is invited to contact CP Herbert Lau from the RC Tolo Harbour by email as soon as possible.

++++++++++

2) ROTARY TELEVISION DOCUMENTARY (Reminder):

The
TVB Jade documentary entitled "Walk Along With Rotary", which was originally scheduled for 19 May, has now been rescheduled for broadcast from 9:00 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. on Sunday 9 June 2002
.

The KGM Board, in a moment of weakness (Grumpy was absent), committed $10,000 of member's funds towards the production of this documentary, and we presume all other clubs in District 3450 did likewise.

Let's hope it's a decent documentary otherwise we'll never hear the end of it from Grumpy.

3) DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT (Reminder):

This will be held from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday & Sunday 8-9 June 2002 at the Cornwall Street Indoor Recreation Centre, Kowloon Tong. Members interested in forming a team should contact President Ebe by email.

++++++++++

4) 2002/2003 DISTRICT INSTALLATION (Reminder):

This will be held from 6:00 p.m., Thursday 4 July 2002 at the HKCEC, Wanchai North.

This is when the "old guard" (DG Johnson Chu & Co.), hands over the District reigns to the "young Turks" (DGE Gloria Chan & Co.), who intend to "Sow The Seeds Of Love" during 2002/2003. We certainly hope DGE Gloria and her colleagues practice "Safe Sowing". Ahem.

This event is also when our District, inspired by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon and his mass Korean weddings, perform a mass induction of all incoming Club Presidents. Sadly though, there are never enough women but, surprisingly, this doesn't seem to bother our incoming Fearless Leader PE Nanu Lachman. Hmmm.

Anyway, tickets are priced at $550 per head, however tables of 12 persons paid on or before 31 May, will only need to pay a total of $6,000 thereby enjoying a 10% discount. What a deal!

Members interested in attending this event should contact PE Nanu Lachman by telephone on 9025 6699 or by email, however I fully expect PE Nanu will be actively trying to recruit unsuspecting volunteers to witness his Rotary "bar mitzvah". Mazal-tov !

Hence any KGM members who have photographs from KGM fellowships are invited to send them to him by email.

Dear Geek:

OK, I finally get the message about regularly updating my Anti-Virus Software, but is there anything else I should be doing to minimise the chances of nasty attacks against my computer? Yours Rick Shaw.

Dear Rick, Yes, you should also regularly check for software updates at the Windows Updates website.

When you get there, check the Critical Updates and Service Packs section to see if anything is available. If there is, highlight the little box next to it, click on the download button, then follow the instructions. You may be required to restart your computer after the download.

Yours, The Geek.

Who Am I?

What is the more common name of American singer Florencia Bisenta De Casillas Martinez Cardona?

The answer appears at the bottom of this issue.

Cunning Linguist:

Are you curious about the origins of the term "Taliban" ?

The word Taliban is from the Persian "Talib", meaning student.

The Taliban were originally Afghan students in Islamic religious schools (or "madrassas"), in Pakistan. In 1993, they became a militant political group and, on returning to Afghanistan, brought their own particular version of ultra conservative Sunni Islam to that country.

By 1996, they had become the dominant military and political force in the country, capturing the capital, Kabul.

Did you ever wonder why...

Japanese "Kamikaze" pilots in World War II wore helmets ?

Golden Smile:

A man arrives home, very drunk, and he is met by his very angry wife at the front door.

"Where the hell have you been all night?" she demands to know.

"At this fantastic new bar called The Golden Saloon" he replies, "Everything there is golden."

"Nonsense!" she replies, "There's no such place!"

The man says, "Sure there is!  It's got huge golden doors, a golden floor and it's even got golden urinals!"

The wife still doesn't believe his story, so the next day decides to check the phone book. After finding a place called the Golden Saloon, she calls to check her husband's story.

"Is this the Golden Saloon?" she asks, when the bartender answers the phone.

"Yes, it is," the bartender answers.

"Do you have huge golden doors?"

"Sure do."

"Do you have golden floors?"

"Most certainly do."

"What about golden urinals?"

There's a long pause, then the woman hears the bartender yelling, "Hey, Duke, I think I got a lead on the guy who peed in your saxophone!"

Quotable Quotes:

"I recently read a book warning about the perils of drinking, so I immediately decided to stop reading".
