Golden News
Volume 15, Number 32 - Monday 4 February 2002
Viva Las Vegas:
Yes folks, The Phantom is currently in Las Vegas attending the "Elvis Presley Look-A-Like" competition. I entered the
"Hunk-O-Burnin'-Love" category but, sadly, I didn't do very well. However the judges did give me the "Most Photogenic" award in the "Biggest Pot Belly In
A White Jumpsuit With Industrial Strength Zippers" contest.
Anyway, having just spent five days in Sydney prior to zipping off to Las Vegas, I'm jetlagged, dazed, confused and 16 hours behind Hong Kong time. In
other words, "Condition Normal".
Bottom line: This will be another "barebones" issue of Golden News.
This Week's Meeting:
This week's speaker will be John Ball, who will be speaking to us about "Leprosy in China".
Milestones:
Birthday greetings for 6 February to KGM Charter Member Dayal Aswani who shares his birthday with movie tough guy Joe Pesci.
Semi-Annual Dues - 4th Notice:
KGM Members are reminded that Semi-Annual dues of $1,500 for the period 1 January to 30 June 2002 are now due and payable.
Please prepare a cheque payable to "Rotary Club of Kowloon
Golden Mile" and pass this to President Ebe or Secretary Clarissa Bellstedt,
or post it to P.O. Box 98129 Tsimshatsui.
Remember to write your name on the rear of your cheque, so that it can be properly identified.
Hopefully this time everybody will pay their dues on time (by
31 January 2002), so that we can obviate the need to again publish a list of delinquent members in the bulletin over
the next four months.
Fellowship News:
The next fellowship event will be a "Dinner & Movie Evening" to be held on Friday 22 February.
The evening will commence with a dinner (at a venue to be announced) and this will be followed by a screening of the movie "Lord Of The Rings" at the Cityplaza Cinema, Taikoo Shing.
Members interested in attending should contact Fellowship Director David "MGM" Harilela on telephone 9168 8333 or by email.

A) Members interested in purchasing
items from RI can now do so on-line. Just click the "Online Publications Catalog" hyperlink from the RI website.
B) Rotary International is having a contest: In honour of it's forthcoming Centennial in 2005, RI has decided to publish a book, temporarily referred to as "The RI Centennial History Book". D) An RI Presidential PolioPlus Summit will be held from 22-24 February 2002 in Mumbai, India. Web Side Story:
The Web Monster is also in Las Vegas this week. Dear Geek:
Due to an amazing coincidence, The Geek is also in Las Vegas this week attending a Geek Convention.
Who Am I?
What is the more common name of American blues singer McKinley Morganfield?
The answer appears at the bottom of this issue.
Cunning Linguist:
Did you ever wonder about the origins of the term "Jaberwocky" ?
Me too :-)
Golden Smile:
Due to a lack of time, I regret there is no humour this week. Yes, I know. This has been a pretty dull bulletin, but I promise to give you a blockbuster
issue next week, OK?
Quotable Quotes:
"Love is the answer but, while you are waiting for the answer, sex raises some pretty good questions".
