Golden News
Volume 15, Number 31 - Monday 28 January 2002
Postcard from Sydney:
Due to reasons which are known to most members and friends, this week's issue of the Golden News is shorter than usual, however you
can expect the regular version to return next week. I also apologise for the tardiness of this issue.
Attendance Director Neerja "Da Numbers" Sujanani advises our current YTD attendance is 71%.
This Week's Meeting:
This week's speaker will be the members of the current GSE (Group Study Exchange), who are still in Hong Kong and who will be recounting "Our Experiences in Hong Kong".
Milestones:
There are no members celebrating birthdays this week.
Semi-Annual Dues - 3rd Notice:
KGM Members are reminded that Semi-Annual dues of $1,500 for the period 1 January to 30 June 2002 are now due and payable.
Please prepare a cheque payable to "Rotary Club of Kowloon
Golden Mile" and pass this to President Ebe or Secretary Clarissa Bellstedt,
or post it to P.O. Box 98129 Tsimshatsui.
Remember to write your name on the rear of your cheque, so that it can be properly identified.
Hopefully this time everybody will pay their dues on time (by
31 January 2002), so that we can obviate the need to again publish a list of delinquent members in the bulletin over
the next four months.
Fellowship News:
Judging by the information provided to me by Fellowship Director David "Party Dude" Harilela, there were some ninety-six (96) members and their guests in attendance at the "Chinese Night", generously hosted by our Chinese members last Saturday evening, at the Gourmet Chinese Restaurant, North Point.
Wow, that's a lot of people and I certainly hope (and expect) those who enjoyed the tremendous
hospitality provided by our Chinese members will reciprocate in due course.
On behalf of the Indian and NINC members of KGM, I sincerely thank our Chinese colleagues for once again being such gracious, generous and fun-loving hosts. I'm not sure about the next fellowship event yet, but watch this space for details.
District 3450 News:
Saturday 16 March & Sunday 17 March 2002 - Annual District Conference:

there will also be a "pre-conference cruise" on 10 March.
For more information, please contact KGM Grand Pubah, President Ebe on telephone 9186 6792.
Rotary International News:
A) Members interested in purchasing
items from RI can now do so on-line. Just click the "Online Publications Catalog" hyperlink from the RI website.
B) Rotary International is having a contest: In honour of it's forthcoming Centennial in 2005, RI has decided to publish a book, temporarily referred to as "The RI Centennial History Book". However the actual title of the book has not been decided, and all Rotarians are invited to suggest an appropriate title. This is quite an exciting opportunity to be recognised in perpetuity by RI. For more information, and to enter the contest, visit the special page on the RI website.
C) Group Study Exchange ("GSE") 2001-2002: The Incoming GSE Team from District 7750 (South Carolina, USA), will visit District 3450 from March 10 to April 10, 2002. Our
Outgoing GSE Team, led by PP Simon Wong of RC of Peninsula Sunrise, will depart Hong Kong on April 10 and return on May 10.
D) An RI Presidential PolioPlus Summit will be held from 22-24 February 2002 in Mumbai, India. You can obtain the registration form and more information about this event from the RI website (if they haven't moved it by the time you read this!). E) An RI Presidential Conference will be held from 22-24 March 2002 in Taipei, Taiwan. For more information about this event, visit their website. F) The RI Annual Convention will be held from 23 to 26 June 2002 in Barcelona, Spain, and you can register on-line here. For more information about the convention, visit their web site!
Web Side Story:
No folks, you cannot get a computer (or any other kind of) virus from your cellular telephone, unless perhaps you lend your cellular telephone to someone who has a really, really bad case of the flu, and they splutter germs all over your cellular while ordering their pizza. The latest nonsense being propagated via the Internet advises you not to answer any incoming telephone calls with certain characteristics. If you visit this website, you will find full details about this latest hoax.
Moreover, as a general rule to help identify hoax warnings, any email you receive which urges you to "send this to everyone in your address book", is most likely nonsense. This is what the Police call "a clue".
Dear Geek:
The Geek is unavailable this week.
Who Am I?
What is the more common name of outstanding British actor Maurice Micklewhite?
The answer appears at the bottom of this issue.
Cunning Linguist:
Did you ever wonder about the origins of the term "Murphy's Law" ? If anything can go wrong, it will. That is Murphy's Law. But who was Murphy? The term was coined in 1949 and the Murphy in question was Captain Ed Murphy, a development engineer assigned to Colonel J.P. Stapp's research on the rocket sleds that tested the limits of human endurance of high acceleration at Edwards Field, California. Murphy was referring to a particular technician, whose name has been lost to history, who wired a piece of equipment incorrectly when he remarked, "if there is any way to do things wrong, he will." A few weeks later in a press conference, Stapp credited his program's safety record to planning for Murphy's Law. The rest, as they say, is history.
Golden Smile:
I regret there is again no humour this week.
Quotable Quotes:
