Sock It To Me:

BoxerWell, despite my best intentions, I was prevented from attending last week's meeting due to a minor crisis which erupted with one of my customers on Wednesday morning. It only took me 10 minutes to resolve the "crisis", however the travelling time to the site and back was 1 hour each way. Bummer. Luckily I had Barry White to keep me company. Ooooh, baby.

Anyway my spies tell me that Susie "Madam Lash" Misini has finally returned from her sojourn in Ibiza, and she really cracked her Sergeant's whip, however she kept yelling out "Ole!". One of her first victims was Pico "El Gringo" Dialdas, who arrived at the meeting sporting a cut lip, which he claimed was the result of being a passionate kisser. Yeah, right!

Despite his vehement denial, the Phantom suspects Pico was given one "on the kisser" by his good lady Bina (pictured left, in a playful mood), and I have absolutely no doubt that he deserved it. Bad Pico. Bad, bad Pico!

By the way, Sergeant Susie's report is now taking so long to deliver, we're thinking of having someone give her a vote of thanks, and it's possible that future meetings may need to commence at 11:00 a.m. Of course, if we also consider the way in which our Fearless Leader, President Ebe Tung "Chee Wow", invariably allows our meetings to run into overtime, heck, we may as well write-off Wednesdays altogether!

Meanwhile, from the back of the house, KGM Attendance Director Neerja "Da Numbers" Sujanani reports that our YTD attendance continues to hover at the 77% mark, which I guess is still not too shabby for July & August. Keep doing those make-ups, folks.

Finally, I have no idea what our guest speaker last week, John Dinglebeck, had to say about "The Future of Telecommunications" but, judging by prices prevailing around town these days, my prediction is cheaper cellular telephones. This is a good thing.

This Week's Meeting:

This week's speaker is (your guess is as good as mine) who will be speaking to us on (fill in the blank). I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.

Milestones:

1. Congratulations to the Interact Club of Ying Wa College, our first youth club, who celebrated their 10th Anniversary on 1 September 2001. The club was chartered during the presidency of the late PP Hans Schult, who obtained considerable assistance at the time from PP C.K. Tsang.

2. Glückwünsche to Rtn. Hans Peter who was recently appointed to the KGM Board of Directors, in order to fill the vacancy which occurred with the resignation of Rtn. S.K. Lam earlier this year. Our old mate Hans has not been assigned a portfolio yet, however he has graciously volunteered to be in charge of the beer. What a dedicated Rotarian!

Nonetheless, his appointment is worrying news because, apart from already having to deal with a majority of women on the KGM BOD this year, we now have to deal with three (3) Germans too. Fluch!

Member Updates:

1) Newly appointed KGM Director Hans "I know nothing" Peter advises members of his new email address (this month!), which is veltins@netvigator.com and he asks members to cease using his former email address at AOL.com, which has caused him considerable grief.

2) Former KGM member Teresa Cheung has expressed an interest in re-joining KGM. More news about Teresa (and two other prospective members), will appear soon in forthcoming issues of the Golden News.

Fellowship News:

Well at least Fellowship Director David "Party Dude" Harilela has decided to keep me informed.

Our next fellowship will be cocktails and dinner at 7:30 p.m. Sunday 23 September, 2001 at the Harilela Mansion (a.k.a. Holiday Inn Kowloon North), 1 Durham Road, Kowloon Tong.

Our hosts for the evening will be the gracious, charming and beautiful Avisha Harilela and some guy called David.

If you are able to attend, please confirm by email or you can telephone "Amazing" Grace at 2376 2811.

Important note: The Harilela Family does NOT observe "Indian Time". Hence if you arrive there on Monday, the samosas will probably be gone. Of course, the chicken tikka will definitely be gone by 7:35 p.m. on Sunday, if I have anything to do with it. Yummy!

Semi-Annual Dues - Shame List Shrinks:

Well it seems my nasty attempts to embarrass our members into paying their dues is working, because this week we received payments from another four (4) members.
Slowly, slowly catchy monkey.

Anyway the following members remain delinquent:

Chris Carroll, Balu Chainrai, Per Larsen, Norman Liu, Hans Peter.

-:which means only 10% of our members have not yet paid their dues. Gee, this is getting exciting. It makes being Treasurer so much fun.

Gee, wouldn't it be great if they all paid up before the next lot of dues become payable in December?

District 3450 News:

1) A District Rotary Foundation Seminar will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Saturday 8 September 2001 at the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Jockey Club Building, 99 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Aberdeen, Hong Kong. The registration fee is HK$320 per person, which includes lunch. The keynote speaker will be Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator PDG Jackson Hsieh from Taiwan. I expect that KGM Rotary Foundation Director Miranda "Show Me The Money" Kong will be leading the KGM delegation to this event.

The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International does tremendous work around the world and additional information about the various programs they undertake can be obtained at their web pages.

2) A District Swimming Gala will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday 23 September 2001 at the Ma On Shan swimming pool. We presume our resident swimming champion, IPP Cassidy "Garoupa" Lam will once again rule the waves!

3) A District Vocational  Service Seminar will be held during the regular club meeting of RC Peninsula from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday 30 October 2001 at the Hong Kong Hotel, Tsimshatsui. There is no charge for the seminar; attendees only need to pay for their lunch.

More information can be obtained from KGM Vocational Service Director PP Louis Thomas, who will undoubtedly be seeking KGM members to accompany him.

C) The 2001 Rotary Institute for RI Zone 4 will be held from 19-21 October 2001 at the Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. For more information about this event, visit their web site.

Dear Geek, My wife Shelley, er sorry, Shirley constantly complains that I am always ignoring her and our three, no, four kids, because I spend too much time on the Internet. What should I do ? Yours, Warren Wesley Williams.

Dear WWW, Tell her to get with the program and send you an email. Yours, The Geek.

Cunning Linguist:

Did you know that the expression "The bee's knees", dates from the "roaring twenties" in North America, the time of "prohibition"?

It's one of a set of nonsense catchphrases that originated in North America in the 1920s, the period of the flappers, nearly all of which compared some thing of excellent quality to a part of an animal. In those days, you might have heard such curious phrases as the "cat's meow""bullfrog's beard", "gnat's elbows", "monkey's eyebrows", "cat's whiskers", and dozens of others.

Only a few of these expressions have survived to the present, of which "the bee's knees" is perhaps the best known, although "cat's pajamas" (an exception to the anatomical rule) also survives.

Golden Smile:

An obviously drunken man walks out of a bar, stumbling back and forth, with a car key in his hand. A Police Officer passing by sees the drunk and asks him: "Can I help you, sir?"

"Yesssh, Ossifer!" the drunk replies "Sssshumbody ssshtole my car!"

The Police Officer then asks: "Where was your car the last time you saw it?"

"It wasssh at the end of thisssh key!" the drunk replied.

At that moment, the Police Officer notices that the drunk's fly is open, and that his "pride and joy" is sticking out.

The Police Officer says: "Sir, are you aware that you are exposing yourself?"

The drunk looks down woefully and, without missing a beat, moans "Dammit! They got my girlfriend too!".
