The Phantom
Returns:
Yes folks, your intrepid bulletin editor
has finally returned to Hong Kong after spending almost three weeks in the
Philippines. The Hong Kong Shooting
Team did fairly well in the championships by winning
2nd Runner-Up in what is known
as "Open Division". The Swedish Team did not do as well as expected in the
shooting, however they certainly took the award for causing the most
amount of drooling and dribbling among the male competitors. I've never
seen anything quite like it, especially on the front of my
shirt.Anyway,
back in Hong Kong things were pretty grim at the last regular KGM meeting.
Apparently only 19 members turned up last
week, which means that we barely managed to fill two
tables. How depressing! At this rate, we might as well ask the Holiday Inn
Golden Mile to replace our large round tables with mahjong tables.
Sheesh.
In the
absence of Susie "Madam Lash"
Misini, who is apparently sunbathing topless on a beach
somewhere in Ibiza, Spain (photos in next week's bulletin!), the
position of Sergeant-At-Arms was capably filled by KGM International Service Director Elissa "Babushka"
Cohen (pictured above, practicing her dancing skills at
the last KGM fellowship).
Meanwhile, KGM Attendance
Director Neerja "Roll Call" Sujanani (who may require
assistance from this week's speaker), advises our YTD attendance has now
dropped to 75% as a result of last week's dismal turnout. OK, we are still
on target to achieve our minimum overall
target of 75% for the year, but we have lost the buffer we
previously enjoyed. Anyway many thanks to those members who continue
to make-up for missed
meetings.
Our guest speaker last week,
Mr. Anthony Lawrence,
apparently gave members a terrific insight into the inner workings of the
BBC (aka "The Beeb"),
and many questions were asked of him after his
presentation.
This Week's Meeting:
Ms. Stephanie Kumaria will be speaking to us on the work of "The Samaritans", who provide a 24 hour "Suicide Prevention Service" telephone hotline and web site in Hong Kong. Apparently they are launching a new service for Rotary Club Presidents and Attendance Directors ! Milestones:
1. Birthday greetings for Tuesday 7 August to KGM Attendance Director Neerja "Noogie" Sujanani, who shares her birthday with infamous Dutch triple-agent Mata Hari (ahem!) and sultry South African actress Charlize Theron, who starred in the movie "The Devil's Advocate" opposite Keanu Reeves. 2. Birthday greetings for Sunday
12 August to KGM Program Director
Carola "Cha-Cha" Chard, who shares her
birthday with American tennis champion Pete
Sampras (he of the single bushy eyebrow!) and actor George Hamilton,
tango partner of former Philippine First Lady Imelda
Marcos.
Member Updates:
There are no member updates this week. Gee you guys are a boring lot. Don't you ever have anything to tell me? You know - new office, new cellular phone number, new girlfriend, new toy boy ........ Fellowship
News:
Still no news from Fellowship Director David "Party Dude" Harilela concerning the next KGM fellowship to be held on Saturday 18 August 2001. What is a Bulletin Editor to do when nobody talks to him anymore? In the meantime, David is still looking for one Chinese member and one "NINC" (Non Indian, Non Chinese) member to join his fellowship committee, which will thereafter be known as the "Three Amigos". Or maybe Larry, Curly and Moe? Please contact David directly by email or by telephone to 9168 8333 if you are willing to assist him. When you do, ask him to call or write me! Semi-Annual
Dues - Shame List:
Drat! Since KGM Treasurer PP Vince "Show Me The Money" Pinto only returned to Hong Kong a few days ago, he has not had a chance to consult with KGM Secretary Clarissa "Ring My" Bellstedt concerning payments received "in absentia", so the list of delinquent members will have to wait until the next issue of Golden News. District 3450 News: A District Rotary
Foundation Seminar will be held from 9:00 a.m. to
3:00 p.m. Saturday 8 September
2001 at the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Jockey Club
Building, 99 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Aberdeen, Hong Kong. The
registration fee is HK$320 per person, which includes lunch. And no, there
is no mistake with the venue - it's the same venue as last week's
seminar.
The keynote speaker will be Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator PDG Jackson Hsieh from Taiwan. The Rotary Foundation of Rotary
International does tremendous work around the world and additional
information about the various programs they undertake can be obtained at
their web pages.
Rotary International News: A) Did you know that RI President Rick King's major initiative this year is Rotary's Global Quest? This is the drive for every Rotary Club in the world to induct one new member every month, and for all Rotary Clubs to have a net gain of five (5) members by the end of the 2001/2002 Rotary year. B) August is, by the way, designated "Membership and Extension month" by Rotary International, so now would be a good time for KGM to induct a member or two. Click here for more information. You can expect to hear more about this from KGM Membership Director Diana "The Red Baron" Chou. C) The next RI Annual Convention will be held in Barcelona, Spain from 23 to 26 June 2002, and you can register on-line here. Pass the Tabasco! D) Plans to celebrate Rotary International's Centenary in 2005 have begun. Web Side Story:
The KGM web site proved to be quite busy in July, which registered over 600 hits. Our statistics reveal that 63% of our visitors were from overseas and 93% of visitors use Microsoft Internet Explorer for web surfing. If you would like to see comments made by some of our visitors, go to the KGM guest book. By the way, if you have
family, friends or business associates visiting Hong Kong in the near
future or who are generally interested in finding out about Hong Kong,
suggest they visit the Hong Kong Links section on the KGM web
site. It is arguably the most comprehensive set of links regarding Hong
Kong to be found anywhere.
Dear Geek: Dear Geek, How can I reduce or stop the
amount of junk emails I
receive every day ? Yours, I.P. Daily.
Dear Mr. Daily, While it's virtually impossible to totally eradicate junk emails (also know as "Spam"), from jamming your inbox each day, there are certain steps you can take to minimise the volume you have to deal with through the use of Email Filters. If you use Microsoft Outlook Express, open the program and, from the top of the page, select "Tools" then "Message Rules" then "Mail". Select the "Mail Rules" tab and then click on "New". When the next screen opens, you will be able to create email filters which will direct your software how to handle incoming mail. Depending on what type of
"Spam" irritates you the most, you can set up email filters to
block individuals (e.g. lulu@sexfarm.com) or you can
block entire domains (e.g.
anything from @lolita.com). You can also block
emails by individual words or a combination of words in
the "subject" heading (e.g. mortgage, loan, insurance, Nigeria, enlarge
your penis, sex with farmyard animals, naked midgets etc.).
Another good idea is to limit the size of emails which can be downloaded from your server, which is particularly useful when travelling overseas, when slower connection speeds are typical. I have fifteen (15) email
filters established and some of these include blocking anything ending in
".tw" (the Taiwanese are very
annoying), limiting the size of emails I will accept while travelling to 500kb and instantly
deleting any email larger than
2Mb from any source.
I also have an email filter which sends any message from "@yahoo.com" and "@hotmail.com" to my "deleted" folder, as I rarely receive serious messages from such free service providers. I still glance over them before totally erasing them, in case there is a genuine message there, but at least my inbox is less cluttered. Of course I also use email filters to help me handle messages from important sources. For example, I have an email filter which sends messages from my wife to the "Dragon Lady" folder I created! Yours, The Geek. Golden Smile:
On hearing that her grandpa had died, Jenny immediately went to visit her grandma. When she asked about the details of her grandpa's death, her grandma explained: "The poor man had a heart attack while we were having sex on Sunday morning!". Horrified, Jenny suggested that having sex at the age of 94 was surely asking for trouble! "Oh no," her grandma replied. "We had sex every Sunday morning in time with the church bells. In with the dings, out with the dongs!". Her grandma paused to wipe away a tear, then added: "If it wasn't for that damn ice cream truck, he'd still be alive!" Quotable Quotes:

are you won't either." --Joseph
