Postcard from Cebu:

Greetings from the sunny island of Cebu in the Philippines, from where your intrepid bulletin editor is dispatching this issue of the Golden News.

As most of you know, The Phantom is actively involved in the sport of Practical Shooting, and I am currently in Cebu officiating at the 2001 Australasian Championships and hopefully leading Team Hong Kong to win a medal or two. If you are wondering why I love practical shooting so much, take a look at the photograph on the left, which shows two of the competitors, Inga and Vendella, from Team Sweden.

Note their slick competition holsters. Note the classic lines of their CZ75 9mm pistols. Note their er, um, ah, stylish team uniforms. KGM members who have suddenly developed an interest in Practical Shooting are invited to contact me on my return to Hong Kong, should I ever decide to return !

Anyway, since I missed last week's meeting, I had to rely on my spy (code name "Mata Hari") to fill me in on the details.

Apparently our fearless leader President Ebe "Indian Time" Tung didn't kick off the formalities until 1:30 p.m. which caused the meeting to run into overtime. To make matters worse, she also broke her microphone, which PP Louis "Duct Tape" Thomas attempted to repair.

Sergeant-At-Arms Susie "Madam Lash" Misini was as tough as ever, and she fined the usual suspects for a plethora of offences. However her attempt to fine Secretary Clarissa "Ring My" Bellstedt for the disarray with the member's name tag box backfired when she was told it was actually the Sergeant's responsibility to keep it tidy. Bwa-ha-ha !

KGM Attendance Director Neerja "Super Surfer" Sujanani advises that our YTD attendance after three meetings has improved to 77%, which exceeds our minimum overall target of 75% for the year. Many thanks to those members who did a make-up.

This Week's Meeting:

Ms. Sravaniya Di Pecoraro
will be speaking to us on "Yoga".

Ms. Di Pecoraro is a Yogi, an astrologer, a psychic and an astrologer. She is also the founder of Urban Yoga and has been teaching professionally at hospitals, fitness clubs, schools and universities in Hong Kong and Taipei for the past 18 years.

Milestones:

Birthday greetings for 26 July to PP Sir Joseph "The Townsville Terror" Kwan MH, who shares his birthday with veteran rocker Mick "Garoupa Lips" Jagger of the Rolling Stones and Academy Award winning actor Kevin Spacey, star of the movie "American Beauty".

BOD Meeting - Tomorrow Evening!

The next BOD meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday 24 July 2001.

All Club Directors are expected to present their draft summary of their committee's plans and objectives for the year. Those who don't will be shot
, with style, by the members of Team Sweden.

And remember, if you are a male Director (i.e. on the endangered species list), remember to speak only when spoken to, and the correct answer to all instructions is: "Yes, Ma'am". You have been warned.

Fellowship News:

Unfortunately I have nothing to report about the "Cuban Missile Crisis Night" fellowship held last Thursday evening, because nobody ever tells me anything, which is also why I cannot announce details of the next fellowship event. Just call me "Mushroom".

Nevertheless, as soon as the photos of International Service Director Elissa "Can-Can" Cohen demonstrating her Russian table-dancing skills have been developed, these will be posted to the KGM Web Site.

Semi-Annual Dues - 4th Reminder:

KGM Members are reminded that Semi-Annual dues of $1,500 for the period 1 July to 30 December 2001 are now due.

If you have not already done so, please prepare a cheque payable to "Rotary Club of Kowloon Golden Mile" and post it to P.O. Box 98129 Tsimshatsui, or pass it to KGM Secretary Clarissa "Ring My" Bellstedt, because KGM Treasurer PP Vince "Scrooge" Pinto, is out of town and will miss the next two meetings.

By the way, I urge you to pay quickly, 'coz the Secretary has borrowed the Treasurer's gun, and she knows how to use it. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

District 3450 News:

1) A District Membership Development Seminar will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday 4 August 2001 at the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Jockey Club Building, 99 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Aberdeen, Hong Kong.

KGM Membership Director Diana "The Red Baron" Chou is looking for members to help keep her company. KGM members who attend at least 60% of this event will earn 1 attendance credit.

3) DG Johnson Chu, and a small delegation from District 3450, will be joining RI Vice-President Gary Huang (Taiwan) on his visit to the Provisional Rotary Club of Beijing on 28 and 29 July. Any KGM member who is interested in being part of the delegation should contact DG Johnson by email.

Trivia: When KGM was in the process of being formed, our District Governor was Gary Huang. At that time, our district was numbered 345 (the trailing "0" was added later), and our district included clubs in Taiwan. Click on Club History on the top of the KGM web site for more information.

Rotary International News:

A) Did you know that the first motto of Rotary International, "He Profits Most Who Serves Best" was approved at the second Rotary Convention, held in Portland, Oregon, in August 1911. The phrase was first stated by a Chicago Rotarian, Art Sheldon, who made a speech in 1910 which included the remark, "He profits most who serves his fellows best."

At about the same time, Ben Collins, president of the Rotary Club of Minneapolis, Minnesota, commented that the proper way to organize a Rotary club was through the principle his club had adopted - "Service, Not Self."

The final versions of these two slogans, "He Profits Most Who Serves Best" and "Service Above Self", were formally approved as the official mottoes of Rotary at the 1950 Convention in Detroit. The 1989 Council on Legislation established "Service Above Self" as the principal motto of Rotary, since it best explains the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service.

B) The next RI Annual Convention will be held in Barcelona, Spain from 23 to 26 June 2002, and you can register on-line here. Hasta La Vista, baby!

C) July is designated "Literacy Month" by Rotary International. Click here for more information.

D) Plans to celebrate Rotary International's Centenary in 2005 have begun.
