Boy oh boy ! Our guest speaker
last week. Mr. Selwyn Mar, was clearly not amused with the Labour Tribunal in
Hong Kong which is, according to his vast experience, very "pro-labour" (read:
anti-employer). The frustration which Mr. Mar has encountered over the years at
the Labour Tribunal was evident with the emotion in his voice as he spoke.
Attendance - although KGM recorded an improved and
respectable 75% attendance for the month of March 2000, our year-to-date average
is still languishing at 63.69% which places us 25th out of 48 clubs in the
District. Now while The Phantom couldn't care less about our District ranking,
we definitely need to improve our attendance for the sake of
KGM. A low attendance is a bad sign, and it is essential that ALL of us
do our very best to address this problem.
There are some KGM members who
have recorded less than 30% attendance for the year-to-date, and this is
unacceptable. Rotary is NOT a social club - it is a SERVICE CLUB, so unless you
attend KGM meetings (or do make-ups) on a regular basis, you are failing to
honour the PRIMARY COMMITTMENT you made when you first joined KGM.
C'mon folks - no more lame
excuses, OK ?? If you can't attend a regular KGM meeting on Wednesday, there are
another 47 meetings EVERY WEEK in Hong Kong & Macau where you can do a
make-up. The times and locations of other Rotary club meetings in District 3450
can be found on the KGM web site by clicking "Rotary Links" at the top of the
page.
Annual Ball - A
Record Result:
Well folks, the numbers are
finally in !!
The Annual Ball accounts
are now complete, and Ball Chairman Extraordinaire Elissa "Chips" Cohen is
delighted to announce that the nett amount raised for our Community
Service Fund during the Y2K Governor's Ball was HK$139,220.50, which is not
only a new record, but it is almost
double the amount of HK$74,385 raised during the 1999
annual ball.
Given the poor state of the
HK economy this is truly a remarkable achievement, and our congratulations &
heartfelt thanks go out to Elissa and her hard-working team for their Herculean
effort. Elissa would also like to again convey her thanks to every KGM member
who contributed towards the evening. Thank you, thank you, one and all.
By the way, more photographs from the ball have been uploaded to the
KGM web site. Simply click on "Member's Stuff" on the top of the page, then
click on "Photo Gallery". Many thanks to Vice President Ebe Tung and her clan
for contributing the photos.

This Week's Birthday
Celebrants:
Once again, there
are no KGM members celebrating birthdays this week, however The Phantom
would like to pay tribute to the late Mel Blanc, who was born on 30 May
1903.
Mel was known as "The Man of 1,000
Voices" and he was the voice for such famous cartoon characters as Bugs Bunny,
Daffy Duck, Tweetie Pie and numerous other Disney characters. In fact, his
gravestone is emblazoned with the words "That's All Folks"
!!

the nett cost to members er, ah, um only $200 per head. Contact President Ram at
mramadas@indocarrsec.com if you are interested in attending what will surely be an exciting
event (sorry, my rampant sarcasm is showing again !).
KGM
Web Site:
Well it's been quite a hectic week at the
KGM web site:
(1) The KGM guestbook received
it's first message in French: "Etant donné que vous
avez au moins un français dans le club, il pourra vous dire que j'ai
beaucoup apprécié votre site que je trouve remarquablement bien fait. Beaucoup
d'humour, beaucoup d'idées. Un seul mot BRAVO. J'ai classé votre site dans mes
favoris pour vous suivre. Amicalement, Mirko".
Roughly translated by The Webmaster, in his best schoolboy
French, this means: "Given that you have at least one French
person in the club (?), I can say to you that I very
much appreciated your site which I find remarkably well done. Lots of
humour, many ideas. Only one word CHEERS. I added your site to my favorites so
that I can keep visiting you. Yours in friendship, Mirko".
(2) Additionally Rtn. Jack Tanner of the RC of North Fort
Myers, Florida, USA, who is webmaster of three Rotary web sites and email
groups, has added links to the KGM web site and to our Club Bulletin archive,
which he describes as "fun and informative".
(3) The web site of Rotary District 7150, Upstate New York,
USA has "borrowed" the "Rotary quizzes" from KGM and uploaded them to
http://www.rotarydistrict7150.org/RIquiz.htm much
to the surprise of your Webmaster !
Oh well, as they say, "Imitation is
the sincerest form of flattery">
Hong Kong Links:
Although http://www.rckgm.org/archives/hklinks.htm is an
integral part of the KGM web site accessible by clicking on "HK Links" at the top of the page, I thought I should
highlight this sub-page because it is arguably the most comprehensive set of
links to web sites to do with Hong Kong.
If you have family,
friends or business associates who will be visiting Hong Kong in the near
future, direct them to the above link and they will be able to find information
on virtually every aspect of Hong Kong. Check it out
!
Quotes Of The
Week:
"A jury consists of 12 persons chosen
to decide who has the better lawyer."
Robert
Frost
Joke Of The Week:
A burglar, who had broken into a house, shone
his flashlight around looking for valuables to steal.
He saw a digital camera and started to place it
in his sack when a strange, disembodied voice echoed from the dark saying:
"Jesus is watching you."
The burglar nearly jumped out of his skin,
and he immediately turned his flashlight off and froze.
After waiting a
few minutes and hearing nothing more, he proceeded searching
for more valuables. Just as he pulled the stereo out so he could disconnect the
wires, he once again heard, "Jesus is watching you."
He frantically shone his light around the room
looking for the source of the voice, when his flashlight beam finally came to
rest on a parrot.
"Did you say that?" he hissed at the parrot.
"Yep," the parrot confessed, "I'm only
trying to warn you."
The burglar started to relax. "Warn me, huh?
Who the hell are you?"
"My name is Moses," replied the parrot.
"Moses ??" the burglar laughed. "What kind of stupid people would name a
parrot Moses???"
The parrot replied: "Probably the same kind of people
that would name a rotweiller Jesus !"
