SPECIAL EDITION NEWSLETTER
Annual General Meeting & Club Assembly
15 December 1999:

Well folks, it's time of the year again for our AGM, when we attend to some very important club business. There are three main items we need to deal with each year:

1) APPROVAL OF ACCOUNTS - There are two sets of accounts to consider and, no, I don't mean we have two sets of books, OK ?

The first set are the "Club" accounts, commonly referred to as "The General Fund". This is where new member joining fees and your semi-annual dues are deposited, and this same account is used to pay our overheads, including dues payable to Rotary International and District 3450, the cost of speaker's lunches, printing, stationery and so on.

The second set are the "Company" accounts, commonly referred to as "The Community Service Fund", because they pertain to the Rotary Club of Kowloon Golden Mile Community Service Fund Limited, a company duly registered under the laws of Hong Kong which is recognised by the Inland Revenue Department as an approved charity. All charitable donations we receive are deposited here and this includes "fines" collected during regular club meetings, surpluses from fellowship events and the proceeds from fund-raisers.

All contributions we make to worthy causes are disbursed from this account. Kindly note that every single dollar we receive into this account is paid out again (i.e. not a single dollar is deducted from this account for overheads).

Copies of both sets of audited accounts were distributed to members who attended the last regular meeting, and further copies will be available at the AGM.

2) ELECTION OF OFFICERS - The Board of Directors of KGM is comprised of 15 officers. Of these officers, 2 are automatically elected to the Board, namely the incumbent President (Ram) and President-Elect (Cassidy), who assume the posts of Immediate Past President and President respectively.

The remaining 13 officers are elected each year by members during the AGM, usually from a field of 18 to 20 candidates selected by a Nominating Committee comprised of the Past Presidents of the club. Candidates are nominated for a variety of reasons, but one of the key requirements is a willingness and ability to faithfully discharge the obligations of office for 1 year.

However this year has proven to be a rather difficult one for the Nominating Committee, because they have only been able to find 13 candidates for the 13 positions available. Hence the election this year could be more accurately described as a "confirmation" of officers, but we are nonetheless required to go through the motions.

A list of the 13 nominees has already been posted to the KGM Web Site under "Who's Who" and a copy has also been attached to this newsletter. Just "double-click" on the attachment to open it with your web browser.

3) CLUB ASSEMBLY - This is when each Club Director gives members an update on their activities since the last Club Assembly.

Directors are reminded to come to the meeting suitably prepared but, if you are unable to personally attend, you are required to send a brief written report to the President, so that he can make a presentation on your behalf.

Welcome Committee:

On duty this week are PP C.K. "Don't Call Me Calvin" Tsang and Balu "The Body" Chainrai.

Usual drill - extremely loud red sashes and be at the Holiday Inn not later than 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

This Week's Speakers: The KGM Board of Directors

Topic: Annual General Meeting and Club Assembly.

This Week's Birthday Celebrants:

There are no members who celebrate birthdays this week. This is clearly unacceptable. Don't let it happen again next year, OK ?

Next Fellowship Event: Horse Racing Night ?

OK folks, we are STILL working on this with Club Advisor PP Larry Parmanand, and I hope to be able to confirm details in the next issue of Golden News.

However given that the silly season is upon us and there are so many other things happening around town at the moment in respect of Xmas and the "new millennium", we may even cancel this event.

Forthcoming Club & District Events:

As there is nothing really exciting happening before the new year, I'll give it a miss this week, OK ?

KGM Web Site:

Nothing new to report this week except for the "Season's Greetings" garland which has been added and a new hyperlink to the new search engine www.momma.com the so-called "Mother Of All Search Engines".

Cool Internet Sites Of The Week:

http://www.dictionary.com/ is an excellent web site if you want to win at "Scrabble" or just improve your vocabulary. There are a variety of options available, including a thesaurus. Don't know what a thesaurus is ? Well, go look it up, dummy !

Quote Of The Week:

"I am prepared to die, but there is no cause for which I am prepared to kill."

Mahatma Gandhi

Joke Of The Week:

A man was in his front yard mowing his lawn when his attractive blonde female neighbour came out of the house and went straight to the mail box.
She opened it, slammed it shut, then stormed back in the house. A few minutes later she came out of the house again, went to the mail box, opened it, slammed it shut yet again and angrily went back into the house.

As the man was getting ready to trim the lawn edges, the blonde stormed out even more aggressively and repeated her actions.

Puzzled by her the man asked: "Is there something wrong Miss ?"

To which she replied. "There certainly is. My stupid computer keeps giving saying 'YOU'VE GOT MAIL'".
