Web Site Help

Note that this page will be updated as and when new issues are identified or brought
to the Webmaster's attention. Also read our Webmaster's Philosophy

Dear Visitor,

While it is unlikely that I can anticipate, or can offer you a solution to, all of your viewing problems, I sincerely hope that the advice and proposed solutions given on this page will enable you to better enjoy your visit to our web site.

However if you wish to report a particular issue or problem not covered here, please do not hesitate to email me, and I will do my best to fix the problem or suggest a solution.

If I cannot, I will beat myself mercilessly over the head with a big stick ! There. Happy now ? :-)

The Webmaster.

1.  Help ! I cannot find a file which I'm trying to locate. What should I do ?

There are two simple ways to find a file on our web site.

The best and easiest way is to click on "Site Map" at the top of the main  page (or click here). This will open a new window, which will display a list of all the files on our server, in alphabetical order. Take your time, look down the list and then click on the appropriate file.

Still can't find the file ? Click on "Search" at the top of the main page, then enter the key words you are seeking in the box and then click on the "Search" button. However the search function will report all pages where the key words you used appear, so the results list could be quite long.

However note that neither of the above options will search the "Member's Only" protected areas of our web site. This was done intentionally to prevent visitors from obtaining access to those pages by being sneaky !

If you are a KGM member and you have lost or forgotten your password, email the Webmaster, beg his forgiveness, and he may give it to you again.

2. Why does the text on the page look weird and badly formatted ?

The most common cause of this are web browsers which have been set to default to display Chinese or other "character" languages, including Japanese, Korean, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew etc.

Although I have specified the correct character set in my HTML coding, it is still possible that your web browser (e.g. Netscape Navigator or the AOL browser) will be uncooperative. Bad browser !

To correct this problem (if you use Microsoft Internet Explorer), on the top of your screen click on "View" then "Encoding" then select Western European (ISO)", and this should solve the problem.

Once you have finished viewing our web site, just follow the same procedure to change your default character set back to your original selection, if so desired.

Another possibility is that you have changed the default "text size" on your browser. The Webmaster uses the Microsoft default "medium" and this can be selected (by Microsoft Internet Explorer users), by clicking on "View" at the top of your browser, then "Text Size" then select "Medium".

If none of the above solves the problem, it is possible that your browser is from the web's Jurassic Period - see this summary.

3. Why are there little blue and gold boxes below your club's name ?

This is our club's name in Chinese characters and, if you cannot see them, this means that you do not have the necessary Chinese language character sets in your "encoding" options (see above).

However, if you have at least one of the three primary Chinese character sets ("Simplified", "Big 5" or "Traditional"), then even if you view our main web page with a Western European language setting, your browser should display the Chinese characters correctly.

Microsoft users wishing to upgrade their browser should visit the MS Windows Update web site and click on "Product Updates", then scroll down to the International Language Support section.

If you just want to be able to display various other languages, select the Language Support option for whichever language you require and follow the instructions to download it.

If you want to be able to write other languages, select the Input Method Editor option for whichever language you require and follow the instructions to download it.

4. Why is the background colour so yucky ?

The background colour of our main web page has been coded as "#FFCC00" (i.e. gold), which is one of the 216 "non-dithering, web safe" hexadecimal colour codes. In theory, this means that regardless of which sort of computer monitor or browser you use, the colour should appear the same.

However in practice, this is not always the case, as some web browsers interpret the code differently. Also some of you out there have really cheap and/or antiquated monitors. Shame on you !

While the background colour looks extremely attractive on the Webmaster's snazzy computer (which uses Microsoft Internet Explorer), the background colour may not look as nice on your computer.

Sorry about this but, er, doo-doo happens ! :-)

5. How can I print pages from the web site without also printing the background colour ?

The background image behind the text is actually white, so this will not normally be printed when you click on your "print" button.

However if you are wasting gallons of ink because your browser is also printing the gold background colour too, it is possible that you have inadvertently changed your browser's default print options.

In Microsoft Internet Explorer, at the top of the page, click on "Tools" then "Internet Options", then select the "Advanced" tab. Scroll down to the "Printing" section and "uncheck" the option which says "Print background colours and images".

6. How come you use different colour codes for the word "Golden" and the background image ?

The background colour of the main page (coded "#FFCC00") is used solely for on-line display, and it is not printed if you print our web page, whereas the word "Golden" (coded "#CC9900") is printed.

Having done a series of tests, I discovered that the colour code used for the word "Golden" looks a lot better in print than the colour code used for the background colour, however the opposite is true for on-line viewing !

In any case, the background colour matches the "gold" colour on our sexy page dividers .........

7. Why do you still use archaic blue underlined text hyperlinks ?

Although I know how to remove the underlining from text hyperlinks, I decided to follow the common standard on the web, at least for the time being, because our visitors are not necessarily "advanced" surfers, so they may not realise that ----> this <---- is actually a non-underlined text hyperlink.

So, you see, I'm not that dumb ........... I'm just considerate, like all good Rotarians :-)

8. Every time I visit your web site, the "Updated" date is the current date. Are you cheating ?

Now you've really hurt my feelings :-(

Perish the thought !! No, I am not cheating. The "Updated" date you see is genuine - it is not merely a tricky display of the current date.

It's just that I am, well, absolutely fanatical about keeping our web site up-to-date, and so I update the web site virtually every day but, worst case, every three days, even if I'm travelling overseas.

Now, don't you feel bad that you thought I was a cheat ? You may begin groveling with an apology, you terrible person, you !

9. Why is the text on your web site so blurry and difficult to read ?

For God's sake, George, put on your reading glasses !

.......... to be continued !!
