What is an Interact Club?

Interact is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young people age 14-18. Interact Clubs can either be school or community based and are required to carry out at least two service projects annually; one which serves their school or community and another that furthers international understanding.

Although each club is sponsored by a local Rotary club whose members offer guidance, Interact clubs are responsible for planning, financing, organizing, and executing their own projects.

Report from the President:

This year, there were fourteen committee members and 50 Interactors were recruited. The main activities organized in this academic year are listed as follows :

1. Training Course from Hong Kong Y.W.C.A. Western District Service Center

Date : 4-12-1999 to 11-12-1999

The attendance of each training course was only about 45 %. The Interactors were more active in the second training course and the overall response was fair.

2. Training course from 靈實協會

Date : 25-1-2000

Only about twenty-five Interactors attended the course and they showed little response in playing games. Also only a very small amount of money was collected for the charity.

3. Lunar New Year Service Project

Date :30-1-2000 Reunion Dinner

10-2-2000 Center Visit : St James’ Settlement

11-2-2000 Center Visit : Helping Hand

This service project consisted of three days and about fifty Interactors participated in it. The Interactors were actively involved in playing games and the atmosphere was good.

4. China Trip

Date : 17-7-2000 to 24-7-2000

Destination : Guangdong province, Zhaoqing City ( 廣東省肇慶市 )

This project was jointly organized by the Interact Club of Ying Wa College and Ying Wa Girls’ school, under the consultant of the Methodist Center. It was an eight days/seven nights trip to Mainland China. Originally, thirty-six students (eighteen from each school) and three social workers would participate. However, due to family emergency, two students from Ying Wa College had to quit before and during the trip.

In the first three days, students were divided into groups to live in different farmhouses. Through doing farm works and helping street-cleaning, workers could experience the farming lives in village.

In the next two days, we had cultural communication with secondary students. Apart from playing games, we also introduced the education system of Hong Kong and our school lives to them. After the two-day programme, we had a deeper understanding about the culture in mainland china and we build up a good relationship with the students there.

In the last day of service, we played game, held tutorial classes and interest classes for the primary students. Both workers and primary students actively played games and they showed great interest in the tutorial classes.

On the whole, this project could be run out smoothly and responses and comments from participants were good.

5. Interact Bazaar

Date : 13-8-2000

Venue : The Piazza, Kowloon Park

Our club set up a game booth about piecing puzzles in the Bazaar and three secondary four students are responsible for this function. The preparation work for setting up the game booth is still in progress.

6. Summer Local Project

Date : 7-8-2000 to 19-8-2000

This is a joint school project organized together with St Paul’s College and Hong Kong YWCA. Western District Service Center. Throughout this two weeks, we held tutorial classes and outings to arouse children’s awareness in current affairs and to raise children’s interest in learning.
