Duties of the
Rotary Information Director
|
As the title implies, the Rotary Information Director is the chief organiser for the club in respect of providing new and older members alike with a regular supply of useful information about the ideals, aims, programs and achievements of Rotary. The Immediate Past President of the club is usually appointed to this important position and, while he is expected to "lead the charge", all Past Presidents (and other senior members) of the club are also expected to contribute their knowledge and experience. Rotary Information is disseminated in a number of ways. The first and foremost is through club based seminars which should be held at least once, preferably twice, each year, usually in conjunction with a fellowship event. A typical seminar should be of 60 to 90 minutes duration, after which the fellowship portion of the evening can commence. It is very important to encourage newer club members to attend such seminars because, firstly, they can learn more about Rotary and, secondly, they can enjoy the fellowship which follows. Other ways of disseminating Rotary Information include the publication of tidbits in the weekly bulletin, making short presentations prior to the introduction of the guest speaker at regular club meetings and by providing resources on the club web site. Of course, the most comprehensive source of Rotary information is the Rotary International web site which provides information on every aspect of Rotary. Another excellent source of information is the "ABC's of Rotary". However the most intimate way to help new members learn more about Rotary is to organise "fireside chats". This entails the Rotary Information Director, supported by one or two other Past Presidents, inviting members who have joined the club within the previous 6 months to a small but informal dinner (possibly at his home or a similar intimate venue), for a more personal dissemination of Rotary information. Although the annual District Assembly and the "PETS" (President Elects Training Seminar) are, in theory, district organised Rotary information events, experience has shown that far more useful and practical information about Rotary is absorbed by members at more intimate affairs organised on a club level. ~~~~~~~~~~~~
