2003
The official bulletin of the Rotary Club of Kowloon
Golden Mile is published

Our guest speaker this week is
Mr. Daniel Ackler and the
topic is "XTC Ice
Cream".
Rumour has it that samples will be provided for an ice cream tasting during the presentation! Milestones: Birthdays greetings to the following KGM members who this week celebrate birthdays: On 8
June, our favorite counsellor June "Legal Eagle" Liau, who shares her
birthday with former American First Lady Barbara Bush, mother of US
President Gee Dubya Bush.
On 9
June, our Web Monster PP
Vince "Grumpy" Pinto, who shares his birthday with
Canadian actor Michael J. Fox.
On 12 June, Fellowship Director Miranda "King"
Kong, who shares her birthday with former American
President George Bush, father of US President Gee Dubya Bush.
++++++++++ Congratulations to the following members who this week celebrate the anniversary of their induction into KGM: 12
years for International Service Director Elissa "Peanuts" Cohen, who joined KGM on 12
June 1991.

years for Club Secretary David
"Cares" Harilela and Community Service Director Diana "Red Baron" Chou, who both
joined KGM on 9 June 1999.
Incoming BOD Meeting -
Rescheduled:
President-Elect Patricia "Iron Lady" Blair
reminds the members of her Board (who assume office on 1 July 2003) that
her planning meeting has now been rescheduled to 6:30 p.m. on
Wednesday 11 June 2003 at
18/F, One International Finance Centre (above the Airport
Express), 1 Harbour View Street, Central.
Incoming Board members who do not attend this meeting will be banished to the Tower and will be forced to eat English food (e.g. "cruel & unusual punishment"). You have been warned ................ Please confirm your attendance to PE Patricia by telephone 9312 3606 or by email. Incumbent BOD Meeting: Incumbent KGM Directors are reminded
that the final BOD meeting of the 2002/2003 Rotary year will be held
6:30 p.m. on Monday 16 June
2003, at the usual venue, namely the conference room on
the 2nd floor of the Holiday Inn Golden Mile.
Incoming Directors are encouraged to
attend this meeting as observers, so that they can familiarise themselves
with "work in progress" and better prepare themselves for the year
ahead.
If you can't attend, call KGM President Nanu "Nanu" Lachman on 9025 6699 or KGM Secretary David "Cares" Harilela on 9168 8333 or by email as soon as possible, otherwise they will spank you (but not in the fun way you like!). Fellowship News:
KGM Fellowship Director Miranda "King" Kong and Notan "Tonto" Tolani jointly announce that this month's fellowship is the annual Indian Night, once again graciously hosted by our generous Indian members (i.e. it's free for non-Indians). The evening will
be held from 8:00 p.m. on Friday 13 June 2003 at the highly acclaimed
Veda
Restaurant, 8 Arbuthnot Road,
Central.
Recent reviews of Veda include the
South China Morning Post which said:
"The whole experience at Veda takes the cuisine to new heights and
it's unfair to compare this restaurant to more ordinary places",
while the Asian Hotel and Catering Times said: "Veda
represents a fascinating marriage of tradition and contemporary design
appealing to the eyes, the palate and the senses". Hmmm. Sounds
yummy.
Anyway, as usual,
members are encouraged to wear Indian
attire or smart casual clothing. Those of you going by private car
are advised there is a public car park across the road. If you're coming
by horse, remember Hong Kong's tough new littering laws
(e.g. bring a large bucket and
a "pooper-scooper").
Members are asked to confirm
their attendance to Indian Chief Notan by telephone 9035 3734 or by email as
soon as possible (i.e. like, today, dude), and please
remember to advise whether or not your diet is vegetarian.
District 3450 News:
1) The 43rd Annual District Assembly will be held on Sunday 15 June, 2003 at the Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel. For further information, contact President Elect Patricia "Iron Lady" Blair on telephone 9312 3606 or by email. 2) The District Installation scheduled for Friday 4 July at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, Wanchai, has now been "upgraded" to a ball. Further details on the District Installation Ball are available on the District website. This event has been
described by organisers as a "solemn and yet fun-filled event" which,
frankly, sounds like a funeral where Bozo The Clown makes naughty
shapes out of balloons, while mourners sit around with party favours
and silly hats. Previous events were like a
Reverend Sun Myung Moon mass Korean wedding, but I guess now we have a
reception too.
Rotary
International News:
1)
Following on from the initiative of
former RI President Frank J. Devlyn, incoming RI President
Jonathan B. Majiyagbe, who assumes office on
1 July 2003, has also established his own web pages.
2) Read the June 2003 edition of "The Rotarian" online. Rotary Information: Rotary Village
Corps: One of the relatively newer programs in
Rotary's panoply of worldwide service activities and projects is the
Rotary Village Corps. This form of grass roots self-help service was
initiated by RI President M.A.T. Caparas in 1986 as a means of improving
the quality of life in villages, neighborhoods and communities. Frequently
there is an abundance of available labor, but no process to mobilize men
and women to conduct useful projects of community improvement.
A Rotary Village Corps (or Rotary Community Corps as they are called in industrialized countries), is a Rotary club-sponsored group of non-Rotarians who desire to help their own community by conducting a specific improvement project. The Rotary members provide the guidance, encouragement, organizational structure and some of the material assistance for the Rotary Village Corps, which in turn contributes the manpower to help their own community. Thus, the Rotary Village Corps provides a totally new process for Rotarians to serve in communities of great need. Rotary Community Corps have been organized mainly in depressed ghetto areas of major cities where groups of individuals need the organizational and managerial skills of Rotarians to undertake valuable self-help community projects. The Rotary Village Corps program offers a totally new dimension to the concept of service to improve the quality of life. Ask The
Geek:
The Geek, who has been working closely with The Web Monster, is delighted to announce that our new Webmail facility has passed all tests and, commencing 1 July 2003, our club email distribution lists will change from being District based (i.e @rotary3450.org) to being Club based (i.e. @rckgm.org). Full details will be provided under confidential cover to all KGM members soon. Being a web-based system, Directors allocated KGM
email addresses can elect to have emails sent to their "@rckgm.org"
address either automatically redirected to their real email address or
held on the KGM server for online viewing (i.e like Yahoo! or
Hotmail).
The "online viewing" option is particularly useful for KGM officers who normally receive a lot of emails from District 3450 and/or Rotary International. Instead of jamming your personal or business email with Rotary messages, the messages can be viewed, answered and filed on line, at leisure. Moreover, if your "@rckgm.org" email starts receiving unwanted "Spam" messages, it's easy for the Web Monster to block them and/or allocate a new "@rckgm.org" address to you, without affecting your personal email address. The following public email address are already in operation:
president@rckgm.org
will reach incoming President Patricia
Blair (messages stored
online)
secretary@rckgm.org
will reach incoming Secretary Clarissa
Bellstedt (messages stored
online)
treasurer@rckgm.org
will reach incoming (and incumbent) Treasurer
Rajiv Makhija (messages
forwarded)
webmaster@rckgm.org
will reach you-know-who (messages forwarded)
Other incoming club directors who would like an "@rckgm.org" address should contact The Web Monster. Grumpy
grumbles:
Don't
you just hate the way some taxi drivers just stop
anywhere, including the middle of the road or right across a building
driveway, thereby inconveniencing everybody else, while they spend 5
minutes fumbling around for
change?
Who Am
I?
What is the more common name
of Oscar-winning actor Kevin Matthew
Fowler?
Clue: A negotiator who knows a thing or two about American beauty and the seven deadly sins. The answer appears at the bottom of this issue. Golden Smile: I was so happy.
My girlfriend and I had been dating for over a
year, we were deeply in love with each other, and we finally decided to
get married.
My parents were highly supportive and helped us in
every way, all my friends encouraged me, and my girlfriend was truly a
dream. I couldn't ask for a more loving or desirable woman to be my
wife.
There was only one thing bothering me about our
future, and that was my mother-in-law to be.
She was a career woman who was not only
intelligent, she was also incredibly beautiful and sexy. In fact, she
looked like a Playboy model. The trouble was that she often flirted with
me and this made me feel very uncomfortable.
One day she telephoned me and asked me to come
over to her house to check the wedding invitations. When I arrived, I
noticed we were all alone in the house. After a few minutes she admitted
that she had feelings and desires for me which she couldn't overcome. She
then pleaded with me to make love to her just once, before I get married
and commit myself to her daughter.
What could I say? I was in total shock, and I was
speechless.
She then said, "I'll go to my bedroom and, if
you're interested, just come upstairs I'll be waiting for you".
As she walked away towards her bedroom, I was
totally mesmerized by her sexuality and I couldn't take my eyes off her. I
stood there for a moment, and then I turned around and went towards the
front door.
When I opened the door and stepped out of the
house, I found her husband standing there with tears in his
eyes.
He hugged me and said, "We're so very happy that
you passed our little test. We couldn't have asked for a more honourable
man for our daughter. Welcome to the family, son".
The moral to this story?
Always leave your condoms in the
car. Quotable Quotes:
