Winner "Best English Language Bulletin" in District 3450, 2001/2002

This Week's Meeting:

As this Wednesday 4 June 2003 is a public holiday to celebrate the Tuen Ng Festival, our regular club meeting is cancelled.

Milestones:

Birthdays: Once again there are no members celebrating a birthday this week.

Anniversaries: T
here are no members celebrating an anniversary this week.

For those of you who are confused about the term "this week", in this bulletin we mean "from Sunday to Saturday".

Incoming BOD Meeting:

President-Elect Patricia "Iron Lady Blair reminds the members of her Board who will assume office on 1 July 2003 of the planning meeting she has called, which will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday 12 June 2003 at 18/F, One International Finance Centre (above the Airport Express), 1 Harbour View Street, Central.

Incoming Board members who do not attend this meeting will be banished to the Tower and will be forced to eat English food (e.g. "cruel & unusual punishment").

You have been warned ................

Fellowship News:

Our old mate, KGM Fellowship Director Miranda "King" Kong, announces that this month's fellowship is the annual Indian Night, once again graciously sponsored by our very generous Indian members.

The evening will be held on Friday 13 June 2003 however the venue has not been decided yet because, to be perfectly honest, our beloved Indian members are not the most decisive in the club, and a final decision may require the intervention of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Anyway the venue will most definitely be in Hong Kong. Or possibly Kowloon. Then again ..............

International Service News:

IS Director Elissa "Peanuts" Cohen advises that the planned "Club Quickie" to Manila has been postponed.

Apparently her committee also needs the assistance of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to settle on a date, but he's kinda busy right now ...............

In the meantime, the KGM contribution of US$8,250  towards the ongoing RC Paranaque "Cleft Lip & Palate Program" is being remitted electronically, so that beneficiary children will not encounter delays with the corrective surgery needed to improve their lives.

District 3450 News:

1) The 43rd Annual District Assembly will be held on Sunday 15 June, 2003 at the Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel. For further information, contact President Elect Patricia "Iron Lady" Blair on telephone 9312 3606 or by email.

2) The District Installation scheduled for Friday 4 July at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, Wanchai, has now been "upgraded" to a ball.
Further details on the District Installation Ball are available on the District website.

This event has been described by organisers as a "solemn and yet fun-filled event" which, frankly, sounds like a funeral where Bozo The Clown makes naughty shapes out of balloons, while mourners sit around with party favours and silly hats. Previous events were like a Reverend Sun Myung Moon mass Korean wedding, but I guess now we have a reception too.

Rotary International News:

June is the RI "Recreational & Vocational Fellowships" month.

For more details of the various recreational & vocational fellowships available under the auspices of RI (which any Rotarian can join), visit the RI website and click on "Fellowships" in the left-hand navigation bar. The three primary categories of fellowships are:

Recreational (e.g. covers everything from Ballroom Dancing to Yachting, and Astronomy to Flying)

Vocational (e.g. covers vocations as diverse as Nursing and Conflict Resolution)

Health/Medical (e.g. two primary groups, namely Multiple Sclerosis and Repaired Hearts).

Rotary Information:

International responsibilities of a Rotarian:  As an international organization, Rotary offers each member unique opportunities and responsibilities. Although each Rotarian has first responsibility to uphold the obligations of citizenship of his or her own country, membership in Rotary enables Rotarians to take a somewhat different view of international affairs. In the early 1950s a Rotary philosophy was adopted to describe how a Rotarian should think on a global basis, and it said:

"A world-minded Rotarian:

* looks beyond national patriotism and considers himself as sharing responsibility for the advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace;

* resists any tendency to act in terms of national or racial superiority;

* seeks and develops common grounds for agreement with peoples of other lands;

* defends the rule of law and order to preserve the liberty of the individual, so that he may enjoy freedom of thought, speech and assembly, and freedom from persecution, aggression, want and fear;

* supports action directed toward improving standards of living for all peoples, realizing that poverty anywhere endangers prosperity everywhere;

* upholds the principles of justice for mankind;

* strives always to promote peace between nations and prepares to make personal sacrifices for that ideal;

* urges and practices a spirit of understanding of every other man's beliefs, as a step toward international goodwill, recognizing that there are certain basic moral and spiritual standards which will ensure a richer, fuller life."

That is quite an assignment for any Rotarian to practice in thoughts and actions!

Ask The Geek:

The Geek is still on leave because he's trying to sort out the few remaining problems with the KGM website.

Grumpy grumbles:

Don't you just hate the way some people walk down the street at a snail's pace, with a child stretched out on each arm, thereby blocking the entire width of the footpath?

Who Am I?

What is the more common name of  well-endowed model Vicky Lynn Hogan?

Clue: She was a former "Guess?" model and "Playboy Playmate", who apparently loved antiques!

The answer appears at the bottom of this issue.

Golden Smile:

An elderly man and woman, tired of their boring life at the retirement home, decide to meet at noon the next day in the janitor’s closet to have sex.

As they are undressing, the woman says, “Before we start, I should tell you that I have a heart condition.”

The old man, who is hard of hearing, says, “What?”

“I HAVE ACUTE ANGINA,” yells the old lady.

“I sure hope so,” says the old man, “because you've got the ugliest legs I’ve ever seen!”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A doctor summons one of his patients to his surgery and announces he's got two items of bad news for him.

The patient says, "OK, give me the worst news first!"

The Doctor replies, "You've got SARS".

"Oh, no! What could be worse than that?" asks the patient.

"You've also got Alzheimer's Disease."

Looking relieved the patient says, "Oh well, that's not so bad. At least I don't have SARS."

Quotable Quotes:

"Basically my wife was immature. I'd be at home in the bath and she'd just come in and sink my boats. ".
