Golden News
Volume 16, Number 48 - Monday 26 May
2003
The official bulletin of the Rotary Club of Kowloon
Golden Mile is published
most Mondays and is distributed to all club members, District officials and other "friends of KGM". Winner "Best English Language Bulletin" in District 3450, 2001/2002 This Week's Meeting:
Our speaker this week is Mr. Steven Shelby and the
subject matter is "Ancient Chinese
Archery".
Milestones: Birthdays: Once again there are no members celebrating a birthday this week. Anniversaries: Congratulations to PP Joseph "Koala" Kwan who this week celebrates the 14th anniversary of his induction into KGM on 31 May 1989. Board Meeting - Tonight: KGM Directors are reminded of the BOD meeting to be held 6:30 p.m. tonight, Monday 26 May, at the usual venue, namely the conference room on the 2nd floor of the Holiday Inn Golden Mile. If you can't attend, call KGM President Nanu "Nanu" Lachman on 9025 6699 or KGM Secretary David "Cares" Harilela on 9168 8333 as soon as possible, otherwise they will spank you (but not in the fun way you like!). Fellowship News:
Well our old mate and KGM Fellowship Director Miranda "King" Kong has come up for air and she immediately announced this month's fellowship will take place on Saturday 31 May 2003. Apparently the plan is to kick-off the
evening by puffing stogies (smoking cigars!) for an hour from 7:00 p.m. at
the Red Chamber Divan at shop M1, Pedder Building, 12 Pedder Street,
Central, followed by dinner at 8:00 p.m. at The China Tee Club,
situated a few floors higher in the same building.
The charge for the evening is $400 per head. The sequence of events is strange if you
ask me, because I always thought that smoking cigars (and smoking sex) are
supposed to occur after dinner, so I guess I'm out of touch with
the latest trends.
Anyway, if you're interested in attending, call Miranda on 9199 3077 now, because today is the deadline for bookings. International
Service News:
IS Director Elissa "Peanuts" Cohen has recruited the services of PP Vince "Grumpy" Pinto to lead a small delegation of KGM members on a quickie to Manila. No, no, no. Not that sort of quickie! The purpose of the trip is for us to present our sister club, the RC Paranaque, with our cheque for US$8,250 as our latest contribution towards their ongoing "Cleft Lip & Palate" program, a worthwhile project primarily benefiting children, which KGM has supported for many years. The plan is to depart Hong
Kong on Friday 6 June so that we can have a private KGM
fellowship in Manila that evening (and the next day at lunch, provided
Elissa recovers from dancing on the bar at "The Firehouse" yet again),
before meeting our counterparts for a fellowship dinner on Saturday 7
June.
Members interested in attending should contact Elissa on phone 9481 8378 or by email.
By the way, members are expected to make their own flight arrangements however those interested in staying at the New World Hotel in Makati should advise Elissa, so that we can organise a good group rate. District 3450 News:
1) KGM Members interested in getting a copy of the latest monthly newsletter from DG Gloria Chan should visit her personal web page on the District website. 2) The 43rd Annual District Assembly will be held on Sunday 15 June, 2003 at the Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel. For further information, contact President Elect Patricia "Iron Lady" Blair on telephone 9312 3606 or by email. 3) The District Installation scheduled for Friday 4 July at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, Wanchai, has now been "upgraded" to a ball. Further details on the District Installation Ball are available on the District website. This event has been
described by organisers as a "solemn and yet fun-filled event" which,
frankly, sounds like a funeral where Bozo The Clown makes naughty
shapes out of balloons, while mourners sit around with party favours
and silly hats.
Previous events were like a Reverend Sun Myung Moon mass Korean wedding, but I guess now we have a reception too. Rotary

Rotary Information: In much of the official literature of Rotary International relating to service to young people, a special slogan will be found: "Every Rotarian an Example to Youth". These words were adopted in 1949 by the Rotary International Board of Directors as an expression of commitment to children and youth in each community in which Rotary clubs exist. Serving young people has long been an important part of the Rotary program. Youth service projects take many forms around the world. Rotarians sponsor Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, athletic teams, handicapped children's centers, school safety patrols, summer camps, recreation areas, safe driving clinics, county fairs, child care centers and children's hospitals. Many clubs provide vocational counseling, establish youth employment programs and promote use of The 4-Way Test. Increasingly, drug and alcohol abuse prevention projects are being supported by Rotarians. In every instance, Rotarians have an opportunity to be role models for the young men and women of their community. One learns to serve by observing others. As our youth grow to become adult leaders, it is hoped each will achieve that same desire and spirit to serve future generations of children and youth. The slogan accepted over 40 years ago is just as vital
today: "Every Rotarian an Example to
Youth"
Ask The
Geek:
The Geek is still on leave because he's trying to sort out the few remaining problems with the KGM website. Grumpy
grumbles:
Don't
you just hate the way people repeatedly push the
elevator call button, as if doing so will make the elevator arrive
more quickly?
Who Am
I?
What is the more common name
of diminutive (5 foot 3 inch) veteran actor Joe Yule, Jr.?
Clue: He starred in the "Andy Hardy" movies! The answer appears at the bottom of this issue. Golden Smile: KGM Management

KGM
President:
Leaps tall buildings in a single bound. Is more powerful than a locomotive. Is faster than a speeding bullet. Walks on water. Gives policy to God. KGM Vice-President: Leaps short buildings in a single bound. Is more powerful than a switch engine. Is just as fast as a speeding bullet. Walks on the water if the sea is calm. Talks with God. KGM Secretary: Leaps short buildings with a running start and favorable winds. Is almost as powerful as a switch engine. Is faster than a speeding BB. Walks on water in an indoor swimming pool. Talks with God if permission granted. KGM Treasurer: Barely clears a wooden hut. Loses tug-of-war with a Volkswagen. Can sometimes fire a speeding bullet. Swims well. Is occasionally addressed by God. KGM President-Elect: Makes high marks on the wall when trying to leap a wooden hut. Is run over by a locomotive. Can sometimes handle a gun without inflicting self injury. Dog paddles. Talks to animals. KGM Directors: Run into the sides of buildings. Recognize locomotives two times out of three. Are never issued ammunition. Can't stay afloat even with a life preserver. Talk to the walls. KGM Members: Fall over doorsteps when trying to enter buildings. Say "Look at the choo-choo". Wet themselves with a water pistol. Play in mud puddles. Mumble to each other. KGM Bulletin Editor: Lifts tall buildings and walks under them. Kicks locomotives off the tracks. Catches speeding bullets in his teeth and eats them. Freezes water with a single glance. He is God Quotable Quotes:
