Golden News
Volume 16, Number 47 - Monday 19 May
2003
The official bulletin of the Rotary Club of Kowloon
Golden Mile is published
most Mondays and is distributed to all club members, District officials and other "friends of KGM". Winner "Best English Language Bulletin" in District 3450, 2001/2002 This Week's Meeting:
Our speaker this week is Ms. Lindsay McAlister and the subject of her
talk is "The Hong Kong Youth Arts
Festival".
Milestones: There are no members celebrating a birthday this week, but we have two "Old Timers" celebrating long service to KGM and Rotary: 1) Club Treasurer Rajiv "Scrooge" Makhija this week celebrates the 16th anniversary of his induction into KGM on 20 May 1987 (he missed being a Charter Member by only 3 months). 2) KGM Member Thomas "Tic Tac" Mo this week celebrates the 15th anniversary of his induction into KGM on 25 May 1988. Congratulations to both gentleman on
achieving such notable milestones.
Now when are you guys going to announce your willingness to be KGM President, huh? You certainly have a lot of seniority in KGM. Member Update: Congratulations to former KGM Member
Alex Lau, currently serving as Assistant Professor of Accountancy &
Law at the HK Baptist University, who was presented the Award for
Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology at the 14th
International Conference on College Teaching and Learning held in
Jacksonville, Florida, USA last month.
Our old mate Alex, the person without the lipstick (but with the Ronnie Corbet glasses) in this web page, has been a "professional student" since the dawn of time, and he has more degrees than the surface of the sun. Anyway, well done Alex, old son.
So, when are you gonna come buy us all a celebratory drink at KGM, huh? We miss you, dude! Fellowship News:
Meanwhile, back at the ranch ........................ Zzzzzzzzzzz. International
Service News:
IS Director Elissa "Peanuts" Cohen has recruited the services of PP Vince "Grumpy" Pinto to lead a small delegation of KGM members on a quickie to Manila. No, no, no. Not that sort of quickie! The purpose of the trip is for us to present our sister club, the RC Paranaque, with our cheque for US$8,250 as our latest contribution towards their ongoing "Cleft Lip & Palate" program, a worthwhile project primarily benefiting children, which KGM has supported for many years. The plan is to depart Hong
Kong on Friday 6 June so that we can have a private KGM
fellowship in Manila that evening (and the next day at lunch, provided
Elissa recovers from dancing on the bar at "The Firehouse" yet again),
before meeting our counterparts for a fellowship dinner on Saturday 7
June.
Members interested in attending should contact Elissa
on telephone 9481 8378 or by email.
By the way, members are expected to make their own flight arrangements however those interested in staying at the New World Hotel in Makati should advise Elissa, so that we can organise a good group rate. Tax
Tales:
As most members know, "The Rotary
Club of Kowloon Golden Mile Community Service Fund Limited" is our limited
company which is registered as an approved charity under the laws of
Hong Kong and, as such, the company is permitted to issue tax
deductible receipts for donations received of HK$100 or more.
However tax deductible receipts are only available for
bona fide donations, such as contributions arising from our
annual Walkathon or general donations towards our Community Service
activities. They are not available for payments such as
for your weekly lunch or for Annual Ball tickets, cookbooks or any other
item where you get something tangible in return.
Yes, contributions made to our "blue boxes" each week do indeed qualify for a tax deductible receipt but only for amounts of HK$100 or more per occurrence. In other words, we are simply not in a position to keep a record of $10 fines you pay from time-to-time, until you reach an amount of $100, so that we can issue you a receipt. Of course, if you'd like to volunteer to handle such "tracking" for the club, I'm sure the Board would love to hear from you. District 3450 News:
1) KGM Members interested in getting a copy of the latest monthly newsletter from DG Gloria Chan should visit her personal web page on the District website. 2) The 43rd Annual District Assembly will be held on Sunday 15 June, 2003 at the Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel. For further information, contact President Elect Patricia "Iron Lady" Blair on telephone 9312 3606 or by email. 3) The District Installation has been scheduled for Friday 4 July at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, Wanchai. Further details will be announced as and when they become available. For those of who've always wondered what it would be like to experience a Reverend Sun Myung Moon mass Korean wedding, the District Installation is the next best thing. Take a good book. Maybe some popcorn too. Rotary

Rotary Information: "Honorary" Membership: "Honorary" is one of the types of membership a person may have in a Rotary club. This type of membership is the highest distinction a Rotary club can confer and is exercised only in exceptional cases to recognize an individual for unusual service and contributions to Rotary and society. An honorary member is elected for one year only, and continuing membership must be renewed annually. Honorary members cannot propose new members to the club, do not hold office and are exempt from attendance requirements and payment of club dues. Many distinguished heads of state, explorers, authors, musicians, astronauts and other public personalities have been honorary members of Rotary clubs, including King Gustaf of Sweden, King George VI of England, King Badouin of Belgium, King Hassan III of Morocco, Sir Winston Churchill, humanitarian Albert Schweitzer, Charles Lindbergh, composer Jean Sibelius, explorer Sir Edmund Hillary, Thor Heyerdahl, Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, Bob Hope, Dr. Albert Sabin, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and many of the presidents of the United States. Truly, those selected for honorary membership are those who have done much to further the ideals of Rotary, KGM has two Honorary Members. One is KGM Charter President Chandru Parmanand, the inspiration and driving force behind our club. Of course these days he spends most of his time swatting flies and drinking chardonnay, while flipping enormous steaks on his barbeque in Brisbane, Australia. Our other Honorary Member is Sir David-Akers Jones, a former Chief Secretary of Hong Kong. Ask The
Geek:
The Geek has taken a leave of absence this week because he's too busy playing with his latest toys: a new Sony VAIO notebook computer and a new Nokia 6100 cellular telephone. Grumpy
grumbles:
Don't
you just hate the way inconsiderate people with umbrellas walk
on the inside of the footpath under building awnings, forcing those
without umbrellas to walk on the outside and get soaking
wet?
Who Am
I?
What is the more common name
of 50's madcap redhead comedienne Dianne
Desiree Belmont?
Clue: Everybody loved her! The answer appears at the bottom of this issue. Golden Smile: A teacher gave her 5th grade class an assignment: Have their parents tell them a story with a moral. The next day the kids came to class, and one by one, they told their stories. Little Kathy raised her hand first and said, "We live on a farm and have hens that lay eggs for market. Once we were taking a basket of eggs to market on the front seat of the pick-up truck, but we hit a big bump in the road and the eggs went flying and broke." "And what is the moral to that story?" the teacher
asked.
"Don't put all your eggs in one basket." replied little Kathy. "Very good" said the teacher.
Then little Tammy raised her hand and said, "We live on a farm, too, but we raise chickens for the poultry market. We had a dozen eggs once but, when they hatched, we only had ten live chicks. Daddy told me the moral to that story is not to count your chickens before they hatch." "That was a fine example, Tammy." replied the teacher.
"Johnny, I believe you had your hand up next."
"Yes Ma'am. My daddy told me that my Aunt Mary was
a flight engineer in the last war but, after her plane was shot,
she had to bail out over enemy territory. All she had with here was a
bottle of whiskey, a machine gun, and a machete.".
Little Johnny continued: "She drank the whiskey on the
way down so it wouldn't break, and then she landed right in the middle of
a hundred enemy soldiers. She killed seventy of them with the
machine gun until she ran out of bullets, then she killed twenty more with
the machete before the blade broke off, then she killed the last ten with
her bare hands."
"Good Heavens!" said the horrified teacher. "And what did your daddy tell you was the moral to that terrible story?" "Stay the hell away from Aunt Mary when she's been drinking. Quotable Quotes:
