Winner "Best English Language Bulletin" in District 3450, 2001/2002

This Week's Meeting:

OK, here's the thing: Yes, we have a meeting this week but, no, I'm not certain if we have a guest speaker.

As you can probably imagine, our speaker program was severely disrupted after we cancelled a series of  meetings in response to concerns about SARS, and I know that Program Director Carola "Cha Cha" Chard and her team are frantically trying to reorganise everything.

Bottom line: Be patient, otherwise Carola might spank you (and I don't mean in a fun way!).

Milestones:

1) There are no members celebrating birthdays this week.

2) Congratulations to Kishu "Choo Choo" Chotrani, who this week celebrates the 10th anniversary of his induction into KGM on 5 May 1993.

3) Congratulations to former KGM member Dayal Aswani on the birth of his grand-daughter Tanya on 28 April.

Fellowship News:

If anybody knows the whereabouts of Fellowship Director Miranda "King" Kong please contact the Missing Persons Bureau of the Golden Mile Police Station on 1-800-NAY-HI-BINDO-A.

Walkathon:

Send money. Now!

If you haven't already done so, please send a cheque payable to Rotary Club of Kowloon Golden Mile to "KGM Walkathon", P.O. Box 98129, Tsimshatsui as soon as possible, in respect of all the money you raised.

And remember to write your name on the rear of your cheque so that Her Royal Frivolity can identify you.

Fund-Raising KGM Polio Plus Cookbook:

About 40% of our stocks of our
"Dining In with Great Chefs of Hong Kong"

HK$188 (US$25) per copy. This is excellent value and an image of the cover has been uploaded to the KGM website.

To purchase your copies, contact President-Elect Patricia "Iron Lady" Blair on telephone 9312 3606 or by email or you can order copies online by major credit card through PayPal.

2) The District Basketball Tournament originally scheduled for 25 May has been postponed.

3) Our thanks to Friends of KGM PDG "Uncle" Peter Hall and PP Herbert Lau for both taking the trouble to contact me to advise that the 43rd Annual District Assembly at the Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel, Tsimshatsui East, has been rescheduled again to the new
date Sunday 15 June, 2003. Further details will be advised in due course.

Rotary Information:

Some Rotary "firsts":

Rotary became bilingual in 1916 when the first club was organized in a non-English-speaking country- Havana, Cuba.

Rotary established the "Endowment Fund" in 1917, which became the forerunner of The Rotary Foundation.

Rotary first adopted the name "Rotary International" in 1922 when the name was changed from the International Association of Rotary Clubs.

Rotary first established the Paul Harris Fellows recognition in 1957 for contributors of $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary club which first held meetings on a weekly basis was Oakland, California, the Number 3 club.

The Rotary emblem was printed on a commemorative stamp for the first time in 1931 at the time of the Vienna Convention.

The first Rotary club banner (from the Houston Space Center) to orbit the moon was carried by astronaut Frank Borman, a member of that club.

The first Rotary International convention held outside the United States was in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1921.

The first head of state to address a Rotary convention was U.S. President Warren G. Harding in 1923 at St. Louis.

Ask The Geek:

Dear Geek, Sometimes my friends and business associates who send me emails receive a "mailbox full" message and I don't receive their email. Why does this happen and how can I fix it? Yours truly, Frank N. Earnest.

Dear Frank, Most Internet Service Providers (e.g. Netvigator, Pacific Net etc.), usually give you a 6 megabyte (6Mb) storage capacity for each email account you use. This is generally large enough for personal use, however these days it's insufficient for business users, because many emails include spreadsheets and other larger files as attachments.

The Geek regularly receives pricelists, catalogues and/or images from his suppliers by email, and often these can be 8Mb or larger, hence a 6Mb mailbox would automatically reject such large files. To make matters worse, some of my friends send me saucy movie files, and these are also quite large.

If you use your email address for business purposes, ask your ISP to upgrade your account to at least 20Mb storage, so that larger files can be accepted without filling your mailbox. The fees to upgrade your mailbox are very cheap these days, due to the competitiveness of email services. Yours, The Geek.

Who Am I?

What is the more common name of sexy actress Stefania Zofia Federkeiwicz? Clue: She was once married to actor William Holden and she once had (still has?) a home in Hong Kong.

The answer appears at the bottom of this issue.

Golden Smile:

One-liners from American comedian Rodney Dangerfield:

1. I was so poor growing up, if I wasn't a boy I'd have had nothing to play with.

2. A girl phoned me the other day and said, "Come on over, nobody's home." So I went over. Nobody was home.

3. During sex, my girlfriend often wants to talk to me. Just the other night she called me from a hotel.

4. One day I came home early from work and I saw a guy jogging naked. I asked him "Hey buddy, why are you doing that?" He said "Because you came home early."

5. It's been a rough day. I got up this morning, put a shirt on and a button fell off. I picked up my briefcase, and the handle came off. I'm afraid to go to the bathroom.

6. I was such an ugly kid. When I played in the sandbox, the cat kept covering me up.

7. I could tell my parents hated me. My bath toys were a toaster and radio.

8. I was such an ugly baby. My mother never breast fed me. She told me that she only liked me as a friend.

9. I'm so ugly. My father carried around a picture of the kid who came with his wallet.

10. When I was born, the doctor came into the waiting room and said to my father, "I'm sorry. We did everything we could, but he pulled through."

11. I'm so ugly. My mother had morning sickness after I was born.

12. I remember the time that I was kidnapped and they sent a piece of my finger to my father. He said he wanted more proof.

13. Once when I was lost, I saw a policeman, and asked him to help me find my parents. I said to him, "Do you think we'll ever find them?"  He said,"I don't know kid. There's so many places they can hide."

14. My wife made me join a bridge club. I jump off next Tuesday.

15. I'm so ugly. I worked in a pet shop, and people kept asking how big I'd get.

16. I went to see my doctor and I told him "Every morning when I get up and look in the mirror, I feel like throwing up. What's wrong with me?"  He said "I don't know but your eyesight is perfect."

17. I went to the doctor because I'd swallowed a bottle of sleeping pills.  He told me to have a few drinks and get some rest.

18. I call my dog Egypt because in every room he visits, he leaves a pyramid. His favorite bone is in my arm. Last night he went on the paper four times but three of those times I was still reading it.

19. One year they wanted to make me poster boy for birth control.

20. My uncle's dying wish was to have me sitting in his lap; he was in the electric chair.
