Winner "Best English Language Bulletin" in District 3450, 2001/2002

This Week's Meeting:

Yes folks, we have a meeting on Wednesday after a two week hiatus.

The guest speaker this week is Ms. Fay Ho who will be speaking to us on the "Special Olympics"
.

Milestones:

This week we send out double-banger birthday greetings to:

11 January to "Tiny" Tim Wong, who shares his birthday with Susie "Madam Lash" Misini.

11 January to Susie "Madam Lash" Misini, who shares her birthday with Xena - Princess Warrior, Elvira - Mistress of Darkness, Morticia Addams of the Addams Family and Brenda Scofield of Fetish Fashion. Yeeee-haaaaa. Whip Me!

Naaah. Just pulling your leg. Our double-bangers both share their birthday with singer Naomi Judd and Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien, two extremely dull people.

Happy Anniversary - Errata:

I can't believe I inadvertently forget to mention one very important person when I made this announcement last week. Can you guess who I omitted? Here's a tricky clue:

** Charter President Chandru Parmanand **

Did you guess? No? OK, it's Honorary Member and Charter President Chandru who set the initial tone for KGM.

Without  Chandru, we'd probably all be wandering aimlessly around the lower intestine of Tsimshatsui on Wednesdays, buying copy watches, cheap suits and being propositioned by Ladies Of Ill Repute (just like Brian Hodgson).

This is your club Chandru - we're just the caretakers, but we're keeping your spirit alive (It's still Chivas, right?).

Anyway, my apologies for the oversight - please send our love and kissy-poos to Sheila.

Semi-Annual Dues - 1st Reminder:

Yes folks, it's time once again to pay your dues of $1,500 for the period 1 January to 30 June 2003, and this year you have FOUR options:

1) By cash handed directly to KGM Treasurer Rajiv "Show Me The Money" Makhija;

2) By cheque payable to "Rotary Club of Kowloon Golden Mile" mailed to P.O. Box 98129, Tsimshatsui, Kowloon.

3) By credit card through "PayPal".

4) By ignoring these reminders and having the money beat out of you by Rajiv "The Mangler" Makhija.

If you elect to pay by cheque, remember to clearly write your name on the back of the cheque, as our overworked,  unpaid and heavily armed Treasurer doesn't always know which company name belongs to which member.

Fellowship News - Reminder:

Our old mate KGM Fellowship Director Miranda "King" Kong announces that our next event will be the highly popular Chinese Night, once again to be graciously hosted by our wonderful Chinese members.

The event will take place from 7:30 p.m. on Friday 17 January 2003 at the Star Seafood Floating Restaurant, 55 Gai Chung Kui Road, Shatin, and members are asked to wear Chinese costumes. Judging by the turnout over the past few years, Shanghai Tang should be a sponsor of the evening!

There's also a rumour that mahjong will be available before the dinner, however some Chinese members want to keep this hush-hush as they are apparently still grumbling about losing money for the last two years to one of our NINC members, who shall not be identified (Go Phantom!)

Anyway, in the absence of Miranda (who's busy studying her "Mahjong For Dummies" book), members planning to attend this event should contact Elissa "Peanuts" Cohen by email or on telephone 9481 8378.

Fund-Raising KGM Polio Plus Cookbook:

Sales of our revised cookbook entitled "Dining In with Great Chefs of Hong Kong" continue unabated and, at only HK$188 (US$25) per copy, the cookbook is excellent value. An image of the cover has been uploaded to the KGM website.

For more information about the cookbook, contact President-Elect Lady Patricia of Happy Valley on telephone 9312 3606 or by email.

Remember, KGM can now accept online payments by major credit card through PayPal.

Please tell your friends in Hong Kong and overseas about this new facility, in order to assist sales of the cook book in support of our Polio Plus fund-raising activities.

Community Service News - Reminder:

KGM Community Service Director Diana Chou announces that, in collaboration with the RC Hou Koung,  she has organised a Medical Check for the Elderly in Macau, from 10:30 a.m. on Sunday 19 January 2003.

Apparently some members who have already confirmed their attendance will depart Hong Kong on Saturday afternoon in order to enjoy some fellowship in Macau the evening before the event. Other members will be departing on Sunday morning.

In both cases, free ferry tickets are being arranged for all participants.

The purpose of the visit is to conduct health checks for over 500 elderly patients, who will be examined for blood pressure, fat content, diabetes, lung and liver functions, bone density and blood vessel pressure.

Members willing to lend their support should contact Diana Chou by email. Note that clicking on the email link will also send a copy of the message to Elissa Cohen.

District 3450 News:

The District Sports Day
will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday 12 January 2003 at the Stanley Ho Sports Centre, Sha Wan Drive, Sandy Bay, Pokfulam, Hong Kong. Ted Ho of the RC Kingspark Hong Kong is the Big Kahuna, and he can be contacted by telephone on 9092 0533 or by
email.

Rotary International News:

KGM Club Secretary David "Party Dude" Harilela reminds members that he has been appointed "On To Brisbane Chairman" in respect of the next RI Convention to be held in Brisbane, Australia from 1-4 June 2003.

For those of you who have never been to Australia or those who went to Melbourne in 1994 and who want to try starting another bush fire (PP C.K.?), you should not miss this opportunity. By the way, they apparently have smaller snakes in Brisbane.

Members visiting Brisbane will have the pleasure of having dinner hosted by Sheila and Chandru Parmanand, pictured left in Brisbane recently with Former KGM and District First Lady Renu Sani and some funny looking bloke who really, really, really should get a tan before wearing shorts.

Visit the RI website or the event website for more information, or contact David on 9168 8333 or by email.

Who Am I?:

What is the more common name of health worker and humanitarian Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu who died in 1997?

The answer appears at the bottom of this issue.

Geek Speak:

OK, if you find that the Guinness Book of Records doesn't provide you with answers to the stuff you really want to know, then perhaps you should try the World Sexual Records website.

You'll be pleased to know The Geek is mentioned, with honours, under the heading Records: Micro & Soft.

Of course since you'll all visit the website and then deny it, this issue of Golden News includes special ISP/TCIP/TGIF tracking software which will record those who visit the above site and publish their names here on the KGM Website.

You have been warned.

Golden Smile:

Quickie: Do you know the origin of the word "Vegetarian"? It's a Indian (Hindi) word for "bad hunter".

Oldie but goodie: Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson went on a camping trip.

After a good meal and a bottle of wine they lay down for the night, and went to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend.

"Watson, look up and tell me what you see."

Watson replied, "Well Sherlock, I see a beautiful night sky containing millions and millions of stars."

"And what does that tell you?" asked Holmes.

Watson pondered for a minute. "Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What about you Sherlock?"

Holmes was silent for a minute, then spoke. "Watson, you fool, someone has stolen our tent."
