This Week's Meeting:

As Christmas Day and New Year's day both fall on Wednesdays, there will be no regular KGM meeting until 8 January 2003. Details of our speaker will be provided in the next issue of Golden News.

In the meantime, The Phantom and Mrs. Phantom take this opportunity to wish all members and friends of KGM every happiness for the festive season and for the year to come.

Milestones:

Two weeks of no birthdays and now we have four members who want birthday gifts and Xmas gifts in the same week:

Fellowship News:

Our old mate KGM Fellowship Director Miranda "King" Kong announces that our next event will be the highly popular Chinese Night, once again to be graciously hosted by our wonderful Chinese members.

The event will take place from 7:30 p.m. on Friday 17 January 2003 at the Star Seafood Floating Restaurant, 55 Gai Chung Kui Road, Shatin, and members are asked to wear Chinese costumes. Judging by the turnout over the past few years, Shanghai Tang should be a sponsor of the evening!

There's also a rumour that mahjong will be available before the dinner, however some Chinese members want to keep this hush-hush as they are apparently still grumbling about losing money for the last two years to one of our NINC members, who shall not be identified (Go Phantom!)

Anyway, in the absence of Miranda (who's busy studying her "Mahjong For Dummies" book), members planning to attend this event should contact Elissa "Peanuts" Cohen by email or on telephone 9481 8378.

Fund-Raising KGM Polio Plus Cookbook:

Sales of our revised cookbook entitled "Dining In with Great Chefs of Hong Kong" are zooming along at an incredible pace. At only HK$188 per copy, the cookbook is excellent value. An image of the cover has been uploaded to the KGM website.

Recipes, contributed by Hong Kong's leading chefs, include world renown exotic dishes such as "Fromage Sur Le Toast", "Filet Mignon Vache Fâchée", "Le Poisson et Pomme de Terre Anglais" and "Le Haagen-Daz Avec Le Sauce Chocolat".

Of course I'm amazed that apparently none of you realised that the English translations of the French dishes above are "Cheese on Toast", "Filet Mignon Mad Cow", "Fish and Chips" and "Ice Cream with Chocolate Sauce". Or perhaps you've just lost your sense of humour. Whatever.

Anyway, for more information about the cookbook, contact Lady Patricia of Happy Valley on telephone 9312 3606 or by email.

By the way, KGM can now accept online payments by major credit card through PayPal. Please tell your friends in Hong Kong and overseas about this new facility, in order to assist sales of the cook book in support of our Polio Plus fund-raising activities.

Community Service News:

KGM Community Service Director Diana Chou announces that, in collaboration with the RC Hou Koung,  she has organised a Medical Check for the Elderly in Macau, from 10:30 a.m. on Saturday 19 January 2003.

Apparently some members who have already confirmed their attendance will depart Hong Kong on Friday afternoon in order to enjoy some fellowship in Macau the evening before the event. Other members will be departing on Saturday morning. In both cases, free ferry tickets are being arranged for all participants.

The purpose of the visit is to conduct health checks for over 500 elderly patients will be examined. The tests will include blood pressure, fat content, diabetes, lung and liver functions, bone density and blood vessel pressure.

Who Am I?:

What is the more common name of deceased British rock (and occasional operatic) singer Farookh Bulsara?.

The answer appears at the bottom of this issue.

Geek Speak:

OK folks, it's still silly season, so you can expect your email inbox to continue to be flooded with various forms of season's greetings. I've received over 2 dozen Xmas-related viruses in the past week.

I therefore remind you never open an attachment, regardless of who sends it to you, unless you first scan it for viruses, worms, head lice, bird flu, rabies and other similar nasties. It won't be a very happy Christmas or New Year if your computer goes kaput, now will it?

You've been warned. Again.

Golden Smile:

A few days before Christmas, a man enters a pet store looking for a unique gift for his wife. The store manager tells him he has just what he's looking for - a beautiful parrot named Chet who sings Christmas carols.

He brings the man over to a colourful but quiet bird. The man agrees that Chet certainly is pretty, but he doesn't seem to be doing much singing. The manager reaches into his pocket and pulls out a cigarette lighter. He then clicks the lighter and holds it under Chet's left foot. Immediately Chet starts singing: "Silent Night".

The man is very impressed with Chet's singing abilities and watches as the manager moves the lighter underneath Chet's right foot. Chet now starts to sing "Jingle Bells" .

The man agrees Chet would make a perfect gift, and agrees to take him. He rushes home to his wife and insists upon giving her this wonderful gift immediately. He presents Chet and starts to explain the parrot's special talent.

Demonstrating, he holds a lighter under Chet's left foot and the bird sings "Silent Night." He then moves the lighter under the bird's right foot, and Chet starts singing "Jingle Bells."

The wife is suitably impressed but, with a mischievous grin and a twinkle in her eye, she asks her husband what would happen if he held the lighter between Chet's legs?

Not knowing the answer, the husband moves the lighter between the bird's legs, and he immediately begins to sing: "Chet's nuts roasting on an open fire ...........".

Quotable Quotes:
