Special Event - Visit to SAA:

Our old mate Vincent "Bone Bender" Lam has organised a visit to the animal sanctuary of the Society for Abandoned Animals ("SAA") in Yuen Long for Saturday 7 December 2002.

Complimentary transportation, graciously sponsored by Community Service Director Diana "Red Baron" Chou, will depart from the Holiday Inn Golden Mile at 2:00 p.m.

SAA, a registered non-profit charity, was established in 1977 out of a need for the rescuing and re-homing of hundreds of abandoned, neglected and abused animals in Hong Kong. The main difference between SAA and other animal welfares is SAA never puts an animal down just because the animal can’t be re-homed. In addition to that, SAA never refuses any animal in need, sickness or senility.

Since its inception, SAA has re-homed close to 2,000 animals in individual homes, schools and organizations. However, there are a handful (10 to be exact), that are deemed unsuitable for adoption, for one reason or another. For these animals, SAA will be their home for the duration of their natural lives.

During the visit, you will see first-hand the work undertaken by the SAA, and children can learn about caring for animals, the concept of give-and-take and the unconditional love they will receive from the animals in return for their loving care.

Members interested in attending this event should contact Vincent Lam by email or by telephone to 9045 6871.

District 3450 News 1:

Our old mate and Club Secretary David "Party Dude" Harilela submitted the following report about the highly successful fund-raising movie premiere "Tuxedo" which raised an incredible amount of money for the:

District "Hepatitis B Immunization for Newborn Babies" project:

The project kicked off on 7 October 2002 with premiere of the movie "Tuxedo", which was attended by lead actor Jackie Chan, District 3450 Governor Gloria Chan and guests of honour from the Ministry of Health, China.

There were numerous other movie celebrities in attendance, and these included Josie Ho, Mandy Chiang, Koey Wong, Kenny Kwan, Maggie Lau, Stephen Cheung, Mary Cheung (Miss Asia Pacific) and Samantha Teoh (Miss Malaysia). Socialites in attendance included Eunice Lam, Shirley Li, Sally Lo, Perveen Crawford, Harriet Tung, Richard and Kathryn Lee, Albert Yeung and several members of the Harilela Family.

The two theatres at the HKCEC were almost filled to capacity and we raised HK$600,000 from ticket sales, eventhough we only had three weeks to sell them. In addition, we also received donations for a further HK$600,000 and this includes one major contribution of HK$500,000 from donor who wishes to remain anonymous.

While a total of HK$1.2 million is a fantastic result, our work has not finished as DG Gloria set our fund-raising target at HK$2 million for this worthwhile cause. Hepatitis B kills 280,000 people in China every year and the funds we have already raised will serve to save the lives of 50 people, and this is a fantastic demonstration of what we can achieve.

This event would never have been so successful if not for my 12 (non-Rotarian) "angels" (who helped me sell over 300 tickets), and the wonderful work undertaken by Rotarians from Kowloon Golden Mile: Diana Chou, Neerja Sujanani, Elissa Cohen, Tim Wong, Jane Singer, Ashok Kirpalani & PP Ebe Tung. I also acknowledge the energy and guidance from CDS Peter Wan and District Secretary Ada Cheng.

During the evening prizes were awarded to the best dressed gentleman and lady in attendance, and I sincerely thank Sam's Tailors who donated a HK$10,000 custom-made tuxedo, and Harilela's House of Pashmina who donated HK$6,000 worth of Pashminas. A further thank you goes to Holiday Inn Golden Mile who provided accommodation for our guests of honour from China.

The happiest moment of the evening for me was being able to meet up and be photographed with 50 children from the Hong Kong Sports Association for the Mentally Handicapped, who were given free tickets for the event. The delight on their faces was a huge reward and a great source of personal satisfaction.

Let us all work together towards the eradication of Hepatitis B in China, and let us also continue to show the world that Rotary Cares enough to help make this happen.

Yours In Rotary,
David Harilela,
Fundraising Chairman
Hepatitis B Immunisation Project

Her Side of the Story:

He was in an odd mood Saturday night. We planned to meet at a pub for a drink, so I spent the afternoon shopping with the girls and I thought it might have been my fault because I was a bit later than I promised, but he didn't say anything much about it.

The conversation was very slow going, so I thought we should go off somewhere more intimate so we could talk more privately. We went to a restaurant but he was still acting a bit funny, so I tried to cheer him up and started to wonder whether it was me or something else. I asked him, and he said "No", but I wasn't really sure.

Later, in the car on the way back home. I said that I loved him deeply and he just put his arm around me. I didn't know what the hell that meant because he didn't say it back or anything, so this was really worrying me. We finally got back home and I was wondering if he was going to leave me!

I tried to get him to talk, but he just switched on the TV and sat with a distant look in his eyes which seemed to say 'It's all over between us'.

Reluctantly, I said I was going to bed, then after about 10 minutes, he joined me. To my surprise he responded to my advances and we made love, however he still seemed really distracted. Afterwards I really wanted to confront him, but I just cried myself to sleep.

I just don't know what to do anymore. I really think he's seeing someone else and that my life is a disaster.

His side of the story:

England lost. Had a nookie though.
