Volume 16, Number 11 - Monday 9 September 2002
The official bulletin of the Rotary Club of Kowloon Golden Mile is published
every Monday and is distributed to all club members, District officials and other "friends of KGM". Winner "Best English Language Bulletin" in District 3450, 2001/2002
In Memoriam:
I doubt members will need reminding that this Wednesday's regular KGM meeting marks the first anniversary of the terrible events which took place on 11 September 2001 in
New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
Around the world, millions of words will be written about those (and subsequent) events, which claimed the lives of thousands of civilians and rescue workers, who
woke up that morning thinking it was just another Tuesday. None of them could possibly have imagined that morning would be the last time they would ever see their partner or children again.
While there is nothing we can do to alleviate the pain and suffering endured by the survivors and others who lost loved ones that day, we should at least spare a thought for them. A small tribute has been added to the KGM website and, as a small token of respect, this week's bulletin will dispense with the usual humour.
This Week's Meeting:
Our speaker this week is Mr. Francis Moriarity, and the topic of the presentation is "9/11 - One Year Later". Francis was in both NYC and Washington on the morning of that day as part of his work for RTHK covering the visit of Chief Secretary, Donald Tsang. He ended up remaining in the US until the end of September, to cover the events and their aftermath.
Born in the US and educated at Williams College (BA cum laude) and the University of California at Berkeley (MA in Journalism), he also studied three subjects that have remained
central to his work as a journalist: contemporary Asian history, the history and development of Chinese Marxism and constitutional law.
During his career, Francis has covered major stories for both print and radio in North America, Europe, Asia and North Africa. He was a fellow at the French National Journalism Center in Paris, and was working in Paris before coming to Hong Kong in early 1989. Francis helped set up Metro News in 1991 and worked there as political editor until moving to RTHK.

Community Service News:
Community Service Director Diana Chou advises that KGM, in cooperation with Caritas, is sponsoring an entertainment program for 150 senior citizens, and
the event will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday 14 September at the Buddhist Tai Hung College, 38 Cheung Fat Street, Cheung Sha Wan.
These senior citizens live a harsh life, with little family support, and they usually spend the festive season alone.
Program highlights include a magic show, a health talk and a Chinese opera. Each senior citizen will also receive a gift pack containing one kilo of rice, a large box of crackers, a herbal soup base packet and one mooncake.
If you are willing and able to offer your assistance, please contact Diana by email or on telephone 9034 0915.
Note that members assisting at this event will earn one attendance credit.
District 3450 News:
The District Swimming Gala will be held on Sunday 29 September 2002 at the Ma On Shan Swimming Pool. If you are willing and able to assist organiser PP Cassidy Lam, please contact him by email or by telephone 9031 2883.
Rotary International News:
1) September is "New Generations Month", which means we should be focusing on youth, especially our Rotaract and Interact Clubs. 2) The next RI Convention will be held in Brisbane, Australia from 1-4 June 2003. Quotable Quotes:
"With one clear voice, unanimously, we need to say that we will not give in to terrorism. This is not a question of retaliation or revenge. It is a matter
of justice leading to peace. The only acceptable result is the complete and total eradication of terrorism".
