Winner "Best English Language Bulletin" in District 3450, 2001/2002

This Week's Meeting:

Our speaker this week is Mr. Manab Chakraborty, and the topic of the presentation is "The Kadoorie Farm & Botanical Gardens".

Milestones:

Birthday greetings for Wednesday 7 August to KGM Vocational Service Director Neerja "Beer-Ja" Sujanani who shares her birthday with David Duchovny, the actor who plays "Mulder" in the science fiction TV series "X Files"!

Member Updates:

There are no resignations, births, deaths, marriages or divorces to report this week.

Not a bad start to the week!

Attendance:

Our illustrious Attendance Director Clarissa "Ring My" Bellstedt, advises that KGM recorded an average attendance of 70% for the month of July 2002 which, frankly, is not too shabby for summer.

Speaking of attendance, congratulations to the following KGM members who achieved 100% Attendance during the 2001/2002 Rotary year:

PDG Dipo Sani, President Nanu Lachman, IPP Ebe Tung, PP C.K. Tsang, PP M.V. Ramadasan, PP Joseph Kwan, PP Cassidy Lam, PP Robin Ching, VP Patricia Blair, Carola Chard, Diana Chou, Elissa Cohen, David Harilela, Neerja Sujanani, Silva Yeung and Sonya Wu.

These sixteen (16) members represent 30% of our membership, and this is quite an achievement. Well done!

Plaques are currently being organised by former Attendance Director Neerja "Da Numbers' Sujanani, and they will be presented as soon as possible.

Fellowship News:

We still have no news about the next fellowship event yet, because Fellowship Director Miranda "King" Kong is still missing in action.

In the meantime, just get drunk and be silly under your own steam, just like you do most days!

International Appeal for Goods:

Despite my initial suspicions that an appeal we received by email was a fake, subsequent investigations have revealed that the RC of Arrakonam near the port city of Chennai, southern India does exist, and their appeal is genuine.

The club is seeking new or used books, computers, beds, blankets, cots and clothing for local children and, if any KGM members are willing and able to assist, please contact Rotarian R. Kumaran directly by email.

Web Side Story:

The Web Monster has been temporarily committed to an asylum, but we hope he will be back with us soon.

Dear Geek:

The Geek is presently visiting the Web Monster, and apologises for the lack of his worldly advice this week.

Who Am I?

What is the more common name of actor and dancer Frederick Austerlitz?

The answer appears at the bottom of this issue.

Cunning Linguist:

Are you curious
about the origins of the phrase "Busman's Holiday" ?

A busman's holiday is a day off from work spent doing the things one normally does at work.

It comes from the idea that a bus driver would probably spend his holiday traveling somewhere on a bus. The phrase dates to the 1890s (and originally referred to horse-drawn buses).

Golden Smile:

New York Zoo acquired a rare female gorilla however within a few weeks, the gorilla became cantankerous and difficult to handle.

After examination, the veterinarian determined that the gorilla was in heat, however there were no known male gorillas of the same species in captivity. While reflecting on their problem, the Zoo administrators noticed Paddy, a big Irish lad responsible for fixing the Zoo's machinery, walking by.

Although Paddy was not the brightest member of staff, he seemed to have a way with most females, so the Zoo administrators decided to approach Paddy about their problem.

They asked him whether he would be willing to have sex with the gorilla for $500. At first, Paddy was hesitant but said he would need 24 hours to consider the proposal. The following day, Paddy announced that he would accept their offer, however he had three conditions:

"First," he said, "Any offspring must be raised as Roman Catholics".

The Zoo administration assured Paddy that would be no problem.

"Secondly, nobody must ever know about this arrangement."

Again, the Zoo administrators assured Paddy that utmost confidentiality would be maintained.

"Thirdly," Paddy said, "About the $500 .............. can I pay by installments?"

Quotable Quotes:

"I once made love continuously for one hour and three minutes. It was the night the clocks are set ahead for daylight saving"

-- Gary Shandling --

The Phantom

"Who Am I?" answer: Fred Astaire.
