A Message From The President:

My dear fellow GoldenMilers,

We are approaching the end of this Rotary year. This is one of the last messages that you may have to put up with.

As a part of passing on more Rotary Information and  participation, our Rotarian Vincent Lam, being a  Physician-Chiropractic, chose the right topic for his short speech on MAY 17th - "Polio-plus". Polio-eradication is the largest public health initiative in the world. He traced the history, the immunization programmes of the various countries, the efforts of Rotary, national governments WHO etc; and the challenges. As rotarians all over the world are  eager to celebrate a polio-free world, while celebrating an extraordinary milestone -100th Anniversary of  the Rotary movement- in  2005, this was an apt topic to remind the members about diligence and dedication.

The silent work being done  by the members of our (own) Rotaract Club, by participation in Community Service  (e.g; The spastic Association, Society for the welfare of the Autistic persons etc;), Professional development, International Service, District level activities, World Rotaract (Community Service) month  is  to be much appreciated. On 31st May, IPP Solange Leung of our Rotaract Club gave a short presentation on the participation of two members in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). This was 4 day intensive training camp coorganized by the Rotaract Clubs and the Hong Kong Adventure Corps at the highland Training Camp, in Sai Kung. She said, "All those tears and laughter were treasurable memories and rewarding experience to all of us....This  camp served as a solid training ground for us to test our team building skills and also to provide more opportunities for us to observe the strength and weaknesses of each other-to enrich our horizons".

For the information of members, the district budget presented in the District Assembly on May 6th was not passed. We may therefore, expect another voting on the district budget through ballot by mail. When additional information is received in due course, the same will be passed on to our board for appropriate action. The latest news from our DG Dipo Sani says that the boundaries of our District 3450 will be modified to include all of Mongolia, effective July 2000, consequent to the approval by the RI Board of Directors. Rotary Club of Ulaanbataar will then become the latest club in our District.

We are awaiting the arrival of IPP Raju , RTN Kenneth and DG Dipo to report on the RI Convention in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Lastly, to quote RI President Carlo Ravizza, "Rotary offers each one of us an unparalleled opportunity to serve others and to make a difference in the world....As we move into a new Rotary year let us continue our efforts to strengthen Rotary and move forward to Create Awareness and Take Action with Consistency, Credibility and Continuity."

Yours in Rotary
Ramadasan
President 2000

 Next Board of Directors Meeting:

All KGM Directors are reminded that the final Board of Directors meeting for the 1999/2000 Rotary Year will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the 2/F, Holiday Inn Golden Mile hotel on Wednesday 7th June, 2000.

As usual, this will be a "joint" BOD meeting, which means incumbent AND incoming Directors should attend.
.
If you are unable to attend, kindly have the courtesy to inform Club Secretary Nanu Lachman in advance, to whom you should also send your written report of the status of your plans and activities since the last Board meeting.

Alternatively you may send someone from your Committee to present your report on your behalf, however your representative will NOT count towards achieving a quorum NOR can they vote on resolutions presented to the Board for consideration.

Next Fellowship Event:

Advance notice - Acting Assistant Vice Deputy Pretend Fellowship Director Hans "Knees and Boomps-A-Daisy" Peter is currently planning a "NINC" (Non Indian Non Chinese) night for Friday 30th June 2000.

This means that our stingy, er, sorry, I mean frugal Non Indian Non Chinese members will pay for everything and the rest of you can come along and enjoy yourselves for free.

Watch this space ------>     <------ for more information soon, but please pencil this date in your diary now. Of course, if you use a Palm Pilot, use the little pretend pencil, NOT a real one, OK ?

This Week's Speaker: Mr. Hans Kunz.

Topic: The Flavouring Industry !

This Week's Birthday Celebrants:

8 June - June "High Heels" Liau, who shares her birthday with Nancy "These Boots Are Made For Walking" Sinatra, daughter of the late but great Frank "Ol' Blue Eyes" Sinatra.

9 June - PP Vince "Grumpy" Pinto, who shares his increasingly depressing birthday with Canadian actor Michael J. Fox, star of the "Back To The Future" movies and the TV sitcom "Spin City".

KGM Trivia:

Our current membership (55) is comprised of 20 Chinese, 20 Indians and 15 Westerners, and this includes 13 Lady members !

Forthcoming District & International Events:

29 June 2000 - District Handover Gala Banquet - Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre, Wanchai North, Hong Kong. The cost of the evening is $500 per head, however KGM will subsidise any member who wishes to attend to the tune of $300 per head, making the nett cost to members er, ah, um only $200 per head. Contact President Ram at mramadas@indocarrsec.com if you are interested in attending what will surely be an exciting event (sorry, my rampant sarcasm is showing again !).

Cool Internet Sites:

http://www.milehighclub.com/ is, for those of you who are (or who at least pretend to be) totally innocent, a site dedicated to the famous Mile High Club, which you can only join once you have er, oh, um, well, you know, had a bit of rumpy-bumpy while flying in an aircraft crusing at a minimum altitude of 1 mile ! Presumably this is why Boeing and Airbus make their loos so damned small !

http://www.flashmountain.com/ is definitely a web site for voyeurs who enjoy seeing candid and other photographs of people baring their flesh in public places.

KGM Web Site:

A minor improvement: The Webmaster has modified the HTML code so that each time you click on a hyperlink (e.g. Club Bulletin) and then click on another "sub" hyperlink, each click will open a new web browser window, so that you cannot lose your place.

If you have no idea what I am talking about, don't worry ......... it's a good thing ......... trust me !

By the way, when your Webmaster recently visited web sites of other Rotary Clubs in District 3450, he discovered that the Rotary Club of Hong Kong still has a "Merry Xmas" greeting displayed. Very impressed (NOT!).
