Last Week's Meeting - 26 January
2000.
It was quite a busy and interesting meeting last week.
Our guest speaker Mr. Todd Krause gave us an informative presentation on the
duties and obligations of company directors and the various legal (and other !)
methods which can be used by creditors to claim monies due from debtors.
I noticed that a number of members appeared to be heavily
perspiring during this presentation, however I can only attribute this to the
fact that our Thai salad entree was rather spicy !
Anyway, moving right along, I apologise for the lack of
information about forthcoming events in this issue.
This may come as a surprise to some of you but the Bulletin
EDITOR is supposed to "edit" articles he receives from other Directors and/or
members and/or District 3450 - he is not supposed to organise everything for the
club and then write about it.
If I don't receive information and/or articles in the first
place, it is rather difficult to edit them. Sure, I try to be as creative and as
colourful as possible with what I've got, but I simply cannot make an omelet
unless somebody gives me the eggs.
Catch my drift ??
Welcome to the Trenches !
A warm welcome to our
newest member Mukesh Dayaram, who was inducted into KGM as an Active Member on
26 January 2000, under the classification of Manufacturing-
Jackets.
If you have not already
done so, please introduce yourself to Mukesh and make him even more welcome. We
look forward to seeing Mukesh as a frequent participant at regular club meetings
& fellowship events, and an active contributor to our Community Service
work.
Congratulations
!
Our heartiest
congratulations to Jaya and Jagdish Pursram on the birth of their son on 26
January 2000 at Adventist Hospital.
Unfortunately we have no
information about the young lad's name, however given that he was born on
Australia Day, perhaps Bruce would be an appropriate moniker ? Or maybe
Crocodile Pursram ?
Next Board of Directors
Meeting:
All KGM Directors are reminded that the next Board of
Directors meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the 2/F, Holiday Inn Golden Mile
hotel on Tuesday 1st February, 2000.
(i.e. tomorrow evening).
If you are unable to attend, kindly have the courtesy to
inform Club Secretary Nanu Lachman in advance, to whom you should also send your
written report of the status of your plans and activities since the last Board
meeting.
Alternatively you may send someone from your Committee to
present your report on your behalf, however your representative will NOT count
towards achieving a quorum NOR can they vote on resolutions presented to
the Board for consideration.

This Week's Birthday
Celebrants:
Once again we have no birthday
celebrants this week. In fact, we only have one for the whole of February. Watch
this space !
Forthcoming Club and District
Events:
(1) 25-27 February 2000 - Rotary
International Presidential Conference, Regent Hotel, Hong Kong.
This is a prestigious event in the Rotary Calendar which will
be attended by Rotary International President Carlo Ravizza and many other RI
dignitaries. This event commences on the evening of Friday 25 February,
comprises a whole day session on Saturday 26 February and concludes with a
half-day session on Sunday 27 February.
The registration fee is US$175 (HK$1,365) per person
however, in an effort to support DG Dipo, your Board of Directors have agreed
that the KGM General Fund will fully subsidise up to twenty (20) members of
KGM to attend this important event. Members who are willing and able to
attend not less than 60% of this event are
invited to register their interest with President Ram.
Members who register but who subsequently fail to attend will
be expected to reimburse the registration fee to KGM.
SPECIAL NOTE: KGM members who contribute
US$1,000 to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International by 31 January 2000 can
receive their recognition from incumbent Rotary International President Carlo
Ravizza during this conference. KGM members who are interested in making a
contribution should contact KGM Rotary Foundation Director Elissa Cohen
ASAP.
(2) 27-29 February 2000 - RC of Paranaque
25th Anniversary, Manila.
Due to the conflict of this event with the RI Presidential
Conference above, a small delegation of four members lead by PP Vince "It's A
Rotten Job But Somebody's Gotta Do It" Pinto will represent KGM in
Manila at this event, with all costs borne individually by those
attending.
For the information of members, your
Board of Directors has approved a contribution of US$5,000 towards our sister
club's Cleft Lip and Palate Project, which they have pursued for a number of
years now. This is an extremely worthwhile project which gives hope for a normal
life to many children born with unattractive birth defects.
KGM Web Site:
Photographs from the recent Indian Night, graciously
contributed by Chris "The Flasher" Carroll, have been uploaded to the "Photo
Gallery", which can be found under the "Member's Stuff" section.
Those of you who wish to save a few more trees this year can
also send free electronic Chinese New Year greeting cards from most of the sites
listed at the bottom of the KGM web site.
Cool Internet
Sites:
http://dpsinfo.com/ is the home of the "Dead
People Server" and it is the place to go if you want to find out whether a
particular celebrity is still alive or dead.
http://www.landsend.com/cd/frontdoor/ is one
of many sites where you can safely purchase clothing on-line using your credit
card. This site is especially useful for KGM members who, like your beloved
Editor, have difficulty finding good quality casual trousers in Hong Kong with
a waist size larger than 36", which seems to be the largest size in most
department stores here.
http://www.freeflowers.com/ is a site
which male members of KGM should consider visiting, given that Valentine's
Day is rapidly approaching. Excellent service.
Quote Of The
Week:
"I was recently on a tour of Latin America, and the only regret I have was
that I didn't study Latin harder in school so I could converse with those
people."
Former U.S. Vice President Dan Quayle
(Editor's note for the Intelligence Impaired: Spanish (or Portuguese)
are spoken in Latin America, not Latin).
Joke Of The Week:
A new priest who was about to hold his first mass was so
nervous he could hardly speak. After the mass, he asked the Monsignor how he had
performed.
The Monsignor replied: "When I am worried about getting
nervous on the pulpit, I put a glass of vodka next to the water glass and I take
a sip before I commence my sermon and make church announcements.
The following Sunday, the young priest followed the
Monsignor's advice, and he proceeded to talk up a storm with great
confidence.
Upon his return to the rectory after mass, he found a note
from the Monsignor taped to the door, which said:
1) Sip the vodka, don't gulp it down.
2) There are 10 commandments, NOT 12.
3) There were 12 disciples, NOT 10.
4) Jesus was consecrated, NOT constipated.
5) Jacob wagered his donkey - he did NOT "bet his ass"
!
6) We do NOT refer to Jesus Christ as "the late JC" !
7) The Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost are NOT to be
referred to as "Daddy, Junior and The Spook" !
8) David slew Goliath - he did NOT "kick the shit out of him"
!
9) When David was hit by a rock and knocked off his donkey we
do NOT say he was "stoned off his ass" !
10) We do NOT refer to the cross as "the big T" !
11) When Jesus broke the bread at the last supper he said
"Take this and eat it, for it is my body" - he did NOT say "Eat me" !
12) Next Sunday there will be a "Taffy-pulling contest at
St.Peter's" NOT a "Peter-pulling contest at St.Taffy's" !
