Golden
News
Volume 13 - Number 18 - 1st
November 1999
The weekly newsletter of the Rotary Club of Kowloon
Golden Mile, Hong Kong.
Web site: www.rckgm.org
Well folks, as promised, this issue of Golden
News is being despatched to you from the tropical paradise of Mactan
Island, Cebu, Philippines, where I will continue to be marooned until
the first week of November.
Unfortunately though, I cannot be as cheeky as usual because,
well, I have other things on my mind other than Rotary this week, so I hope
you will forgive me for a less-than-exciting newsletter. However I promise to
make up for it when I return to Hong Kong.
In the meantime, I can tell you that our shooting
championships are going well, although I must confess that I have personally not
had a chance to fire a single round yet, because I have been involved in a
seemingly never-ending series of meetings, spin-doctoring and other related
matters from daybreak to well past midnight every day.
Still, I can't complain. I am in the company of literally
dozens of my friends from all over the world and the camaraderie has been
absolutely fantastic.
In other words, it is akin to being at a Rotary International
convention but where everybody is carrying a gun, in the spirit of
sportsmanship.
Congratulations -
Correction:
In last week's issue, I congratulated the lovely Terese
Thomas for surviving 27 years of marriage to PP Louis Thomas, and I even
suggested she deserved a medal for her endurance.
However it was brought to my attention that Terese
has actually survived for 37 years (!!!), so Terese not only deserves
a medal for her incredible stamina, I think there should be a statue erected in
her honour.
Oh yeah. They should also re-write the Geneva Convention
after which PP Louis should be arrested for dispensing cruel and unusual
punishment just for turning up !!
Welcome Committee:
On duty this week
are Ashok Assomull and Diana Chou.
This Week's Speakers: It's A
Surprise !
Topic: OK, I have absolutely no idea.
This Week's Birthday
Celebrants:
2 November - Jack "In The Box" O'Rourke, who
shares his birthday with Daniel Boone, the legendary American who did something
once extremely brave and famous (OK, so I also forgot to bring my notes to
Cebu).
5 November - Terrence "The Terrorist"
Annamunthodo who shares his birthday with my childhood hero Roy Rogers, the
King Of The Cowboys, who had a Palomino horse named Trigger, which is why I
named one of my companies Palomino Investments Limited. There. My secret has
been revealed.
Next Fellowship Event: Chinese Night
& Karaoke !
Date and Time: 20 November, 1999 at 7:30 p.m.
Venue: Sze Chuen Lau, UG/F, South Seas Centre, 77 Mody Road,
Tsimshatsui East.
Ample parking is available in the building and nearby at
Chinachem Plaza and New Mandarin Plaza.
It's still a case of good news (it's free to non-Chinese
members) and bad news (there's karaoke), but I say the good news outweighs the
bad news, even considering that PP Robin "Willie" Ching and PP Cassidy "Julio"
Lam may give us their joint rendition of "To All The Girls I've Loved
Before".
Forthcoming Club & District
Events:
KGM Fund-Raising Walkathon - 5 December
1999
This will be
held on Sunday 5 December 1999, commencing
from the sitting-out area above Wong Nei Chung Gap and ending 4 miles and about
2 hours later at Tai Tam Tuk Village (200 metres north of Tai Tam Scout Sea
Activities Centre).
The route will commence
uphill with what PP Louis describes as a "minor incline" towards Parkview (i.e.
steeper than the lobby of the Holiday Inn but less than climbing Mount Everest
!). The remainder of the route is either flat or downhill on rendered
surfaces or country paths, and the route passes through the most beautiful
country park in Hong Kong.
Anyway, your club hopes
that this event will be the sole Fund Raising event of the year, and we expect
that every member will raise (or contribute) not less
than the paltry sum of $2,000 in sponsorship. Official KGM Sponsorship
Forms will be available soon.
If we don't achieve our
Fund-Raising target with this event, we will need to embark upon additional
fund-raising activities, so please support this event and maybe we can leave you
alone for the rest of the year, OK ?
KGM Web Site:
Nothing at all to report this week, because the poor
modem speeds in Cebu makes it virtually impossible for your Webmaster to make
changes to the KGM web site.
Cool Internet Site Of The
Week:
Ditto.
Quote Of The Week:
"It's just a job. Grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand. I just beat
people up.".
Mohammed Ali (The American Boxer)
Joke Of The Week:
There was an old man, a boy and a donkey. They were
going to town and it was decided that the boy should ride. As they went
along they passed some people who thought that it was a shame for the boy to
ride and the old man to walk.
The man and boy decided that maybe the critics were right so
they changed positions. Later, they passed some more people who thought
that it was a real shame for the man to make such a small boy walk.
The two decided that maybe they both should walk. Soon
they passed some more people who thought that it was stupid to walk when they
had a donkey to ride.
The man and the boy decided maybe the critics were right so
they decided that they both should ride. They soon passed other people who
thought that it was a shame to put such a load on a poor little animal.
The old man and the boy decided that maybe the critics were
right so they decided to carry the donkey. As they crossed a bridge they
lost their grip on the animal and he fell into the river and drowned.
