Winner "Best English Language Bulletin" in District 3450, 2001/2002

This Week's Meeting:

Our guest speaker this week is Honorary KGM Member Sir David Akers-Jones, however the topic is too controversial to be mentioned here (clue: it has something to do with Tung Chee Wah, stiletto heels and the 2003 Victoria's Secret catalogue!).

++++++

From Under The Kitchen Sink: Our spy in the Holiday Inn kitchen, Vincent "You Want Fries With That?" Lam, informs us that this week's fare is Western food, namely Caesar salad with focciao croutons, followed by a roulade of sole on light tomato tarragon sauce with mushroom rice and asparagus or, for the rabbits, cannelloni with spinach and cottage cheese. Dessert is a generous slice of low-calorie banana mousse cake, followed by coffee or tea.

Milestones:

It is with profound sadness that we advise KGM members and friends that KGM Charter First Lady Sheila Parmanand.finally succumbed to cancer and passed away on Sunday 30 May 2004 in Brisbane, Australia. Sheila is survived by her husband and KGM Charter President Chandru Parmanand, and their children Sashim, Nisha and Jagdish.

Prior to taking up residence in Australia, Sheila was an ardent supporter of KGM, who worked tirelessly to assist us to improve the lives of the less fortunate in our local community, and she was arguably the most cheerful and loving person ever to grace our club. And, despite the incredible physical and mental challenges she endured during her long illness, she still managed to attend as many fellowship and other events as possible, and her presence invariably served to brighten our day.

Sheila will be sadly missed by all who had the honour and privilege of knowing her, and she will remain in our thoughts and prayers.

++++++

Congratulations to KGM member Neerja Sujanani and her husband Baiju on the birth of their second child, a baby boy weighing 8lb, on Friday 28 May 2004.

++++++

There are no KGM members celebrating a birthday or induction anniversary this week.

Semi-Annual Dues:

Yes folks, it's time once again to pay your dues of $1,500 for the period 1 July to 31 December 2004, and you have two payment options:

1) By cash handed directly to KGM Treasurer Rajiv "Show Me The Money" Makhija;

2) By cheque payable to "Rotary Club of Kowloon Golden Mile" mailed to P.O. Box 98129, Tsimshatsui, Kowloon.

If you elect to pay by cheque, remember to clearly write your name on the back of the cheque, because our overworked and unpaid Treasurer doesn't always know which company name belongs to which member.

Fellowship News - Two Events in June:

The annual Indian Night, graciously hosted by our generous Indian members, will be held from 7:30 p.m. on Friday 11 June 2004 at the Viceroy of India restaurant, 2/F Sun Hung Kai Centre, Wanchai.

Female members are encouraged to wear Indian attire (e.g. a sari).On the other hand, dopey male members are reminded that the Indians in KGM do not wear war paint, they do not wear feathers in their hats, and they don't shoot at "palefaces" while riding wild stallions (although many are known to wager on them).

KGM members who will be attending should send a confirmation by email to PP Nanu "Nanu" Lachman, or telephone him on 2366 5555.

++++++

According to our Cultural Attaché to Dubai, Brian "Osama Bin Drinkin'" Hodgson, the annual NINC Night will be held from 7:00 p.m. on Saturday 19 June at (or quite possibly "in"), the Rooftop Pool of the Holiday Inn Golden Mile. Special thanks go to our old mate Ted "Basil" Durham, for his very kind assistance with this event.

As usual, the event is hosted by our enthusiastic NINC members, which means that our Chinese and Indian members get in for free (but please don't eat or drink too much, because all the NINCs are on welfare).

Anyway, there will be a BBQ. There will be games. There will be a quiz. There will be dancing girls. Well at least I hope there'll be dancing girls .......

KGM members who will be attending should send a confirmation by email to Brian Hodgson, or call him on telephone 9191 7508.

Community Service:

Our bubbly Community Service Director Miranda "King" Kong informs us that the next Free Medical Check For The Elderly service will take place in Macau on Sunday 6 June 2004 at a venue to be advised. This event is organised in conjunction with the RC Hou Kuong.

KGM members interested in attending the above event should contact Miranda by telephone on 9199 3077 or by email pronto, especially as ferry tickets need to be finalised.

++++++

The Free Medical Check for the elderly held last Sunday at the Wai Ji Christian Service Sheltered Workshop in Sham Shui Po was a resounding success as 510 elderly people, including 150 blind persons, were examined by five doctors from St Paul's Hospital. KGM members who attended were greatly impressed by the high level of caring support shown to the elderly patients by both our Rotaractors and our Interactors.

International Service:

Our old mate David "Hip-Hop" Harilela has organised a visit to the RC Shanghai from 25 to 27 June 2004.

David has negotiated a special price of only $5,388 per person, which includes return economy class airfare on Dragonair, airport transfers, deluxe twin-share accommodation at the Ritz Carlton Hotel and breakfast. There's a surcharge for those who have terrible personal hygiene and want their own room.

If you're interested in attending, contact David on telephone 9168 8333 or by email for further details.

Rotary Information:

The Exchange of Club Banners: One of the colorful traditions of many Rotary clubs is the exchange of small banners, flags, or pennants. Rotarians traveling to distant locations often take banners to exchange at make-up meetings as a token of friendship. Many clubs use the decorative banners they have received for attractive displays at club meetings and district events.

The Rotary International Board recognized the growing popularity of the banner exchange back in 1959 and encouraged participating clubs to ensure that the design of their banners is distinctive and expressive of the club’s community and country. It is recommended that banners include pictures, slogans, or designs portraying the territorial area of the club. The Board was also mindful of the financial burden such exchanges may impose upon some clubs, especially in popular areas where many visitors make up and request to exchange banners.

In all instances, clubs are cautioned to exercise discretion and moderation in the exchange of banners so that the financial obligations do not interfere with the basic service activities of the club.

Exchanging club banners is a very pleasant custom, especially when a creative and artistic banner tells an interesting story of community pride. The exchange of banners is a significant tradition of Rotary and serves as a tangible symbol of our international fellowship.

KGM Note: Apart from the usual cloth-type club banners, we believe KGM is the first Rotary Club in the world to introduce cheap and environmentally-friendly banner postcards. If you've never seen them, ask the KGM President or Secretary for some samples.

Ask The Geek:

Dear Geek, Over the past few weeks, I've received a spate of email messages from Citibank, AOL, eBay and various other organisations asking me to update my personal information to avoid my account being cancelled. Are these requests legitimate? Yours truly, Concerned in Hooterville.

Dear Concerned, It's very likely that such requests are bogus, and I urge that you do not respond to such emails. There are numerous "Phishing" scams circulating around the Internet each day, and many of these attempt to obtain your personal details such as passwords or PIN numbers by pretending to be from a legitimate source.

Just delete them and return to more productive activities, such as playing Minesweeper on your PC.

Golden Smile:

A married couple had been involved in an accident, where the wife had her face severely burned.

The doctor told the husband that they could not graft any skin from her own body as she has recently been ill and had lost a lot of weight and she was also too skinny.

The doctor suggested that the hubby could offer some of his skin for the facial skin grafts, however the only skin the doctors said was suitable would have to come off his buttocks. Although the husband and wife both found this to be a bit embarrassing, they decided to proceed, but promised each other they would never tell anyone about the origins of the skin.

After the surgery was complete and the woman's face had healed, everyone commented on how radiant and lovely she looked.

One day when she was alone with her husband, the wife was quite overcome by her husband's sacrifice, so she said, "Darling, I just want to once again thank you for everything you did for me. I love you so much and there's no way I could ever repay you for your sacrifice."

The hubby replied, " My dear, think nothing of it, I get all the thanks I ever need every time I see your mother kiss you on the cheek."

Quotable Quotes:

"Man is the only animal that laughs and weeps; for he is the only animal that is struck with the difference between what things are, and what they ought to be".
