Fellowship News - Last Call (definitely):

What dat Vincent be smokin' mon?

Anyway, our old mate Vincent "Pass The Dutchie" Lam assures us that the next fellowship is definitely being held at the critically acclaimed Gaia Restaurant (a member of the Va Bene Group), at G/F, Grand Millennium Plaza, 181 Queen's Road Central, Hong Kong (Tel: 2167-8200) at 7:30 pm tomorrow evening Tuesday 3 February 2004, and the owner of Gaia, renown restauranteur Pino Piano will attend to us personally and give us a guided tour of his kitchen.

The cost is $500 per head (discounted from the usual $800 per head).

Our other old mate, PP C.K. "Don't Call Me Calvin" Tsang has arranged for two cases of exceptional vintage French wines (i.e. 1995 Chateau des Jouallen & 1998 LaLaurie Sauvignon Blanc) for the occasion. Of course I doubt they're anywhere as good as award winning Australian wines such as the 2004 Chateau Woolloomooloo Wombat or the 2003 Gundagai Jungle Juice but, hey, we don't want to hurt CK's feelings, OK?

If you would like to attend, please contact Vincent on telephone 9045 6871 (collect calls OK), before he changes his bloody mind again.

2004 Annual Ball - Reminder:

Yes folks, it's back. The world famous KGM Annual Ball, which was cancelled last year due to SARS, will be held from 7:00 p.m. Saturday 28 February at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.

This year's theme is "Putting On The Ritz" (as in "Ritz Hotel", not "Ritz Crackers"), and tickets remain reasonably priced at $1,200 per head, which gets you an all-inclusive cocktail hour, a typically excellent six course meal from the Grand Hyatt, free wine all evening long, fun contests, fantastic entertainment, dancing until the wee hours of the morning plus dozens of fabulous prizes to be won.

What a great deal - why not organise a table of ten (10) or more for your family, friends and business associates?

And, as usual, The Dictator (who has an electronic "kill switch"), ensures that speeches and other formalities are limited to 12 minutes in total, regardless of how many speakers there are, so you and your guests won't nod off in your soup. Remember our Annual Ball is a "FUN raising" event, not a Rotary Information Seminar.

Chairman of the Annual Ball is once again our old mate and PE2B Elissa "Babushka" Cohen, who can be contacted on telephone 9481 8378.

Rotary Information:

International Responsibilities of Rotarian: As an international organization, Rotary offers each member unique opportunities and responsibilities. Although each Rotarian has first responsibility to uphold the obligations of citizenship of his or her own country, membership in Rotary enables Rotarians to take a somewhat different view of international affairs. In the early 1950s, a Rotary philosophy was adopted to describe how a Rotarian may think on a global basis. Here is what it said:

“A world-minded Rotarian:
  • looks beyond national patriotism and considers himself as sharing responsibility for the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace;
  • resists any tendency to act in terms of national or racial superiority;
  • seeks and develops common grounds for agreement with peoples of other lands;
  • defends the rule of law and order to preserve the liberty of the individual, so that he may enjoy freedom of thought, speech, and assembly, and freedom from persecution, aggression, want, and fear;
  • supports action directed toward improving standards of living for all peoples, realizing that poverty anywhere endangers prosperity everywhere;
  • upholds the principles of justice for mankind;
  • strives always to promote peace between nations and prepares to make personal sacrifices for that ideal;
  • urges and practices a spirit of understanding of others’ beliefs as a step toward international goodwill, recognizing that there are certain basic moral and spiritual standards which will ensure a richer, fuller life.
That is quite an assignment for any Rotarian to practice in thoughts and actions. When this philosophy was developed, Rotary was still an all-male organization. The description of a world-minded Rotarian today would obviously include all female members as well
