This Week's Meeting:

Our guest speaker this week is Mr. David Anderson, and the topic of his presentation is "Chinese Jade Carvings".

Milestones:

Birthday greetings for 4 August to KGM Sergeant-At-Arms John "The Hitman" Hirsch who shares his birthday with jazz trumpeter Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong.

Birthday greetings for 7 August to Neerja "Shaken Not Stirred" Sujanani who shares her birthday with former WWII spy Mata Hari.

There are no KGM induction anniversaries this week.

Member Updates:

Last week we erroneously said Anthony "?????" Wong's email address was:

anwfwong@yahoo.co.hk when it should actually be anwfwong@yahoo.com.hk

However since both Yahoo! adresses seem to fail, you can always try anthonywong@police.gov.hk

Semi-Annual Dues - Overdue:

Yes folks, if you haven't paid yet, you're officially overdue and in deep doo-doo, so you will be severely spanked, but not in the fun way you like.

The amount payable is $1,500 for the period 1 July to 31 December 2003, and you have three payment options:

1) By cash handed directly to KGM Treasurer Rajiv "Show Me The Money" Makhija;

2) By cheque payable to "Rotary Club of Kowloon Golden Mile" mailed to P.O. Box 98129, Tsimshatsui, Kowloon.

3) By credit card through "PayPal" (where you can arrange for automatic re-billing every 6 months, if you so choose).

If you elect to pay by cheque, remember to clearly write your name on the back of the cheque, because our overworked and unpaid Treasurer doesn't always know which company name belongs to which member.

Fellowship News:

Our old mate KGM Fellowship Director "Butch" Cassidy Lam announces that the next fellowship will be a Japanese Night to be held on Saturday 30 August with our friends from the RC Peninsula Sunrise at a venue still to be advised.

Costs are still forecast to be HK$300 or less per head for food, drink and entertainment, which is rumoured to be a Sumo wrestling demonstration between IPP Nanu "Kawabunga" Lachman and former KGM member Hans "The Hun" Peter. Bring a raincoat.

Rotary Information:

Rotary Youth Exchange:

is one of Rotary's most popular programs to promote international understanding and develop lifelong friendships. It began in 1927 with the Rotary Club of Nice, France. In 1939 an extensive Youth Exchange was created between California and Latin America. Since then the program has expanded around the world. In recent years more than 7,000 young people have participated annually in Rotary-sponsored exchange programs.

The values of Youth Exchange are experienced not only by the high school-age students involved but also by the host families, sponsoring clubs, receiving high schools and the entire community. Youth Exchange participants usually provide their fellow students in their host schools with excellent opportunities to learn about customs, languages, traditions and family life in another country.

Youth Exchange offers young people interesting opportunities and rich experiences to see another part of the world. Students usually spend a full academic year abroad, although some clubs and districts sponsor short-term exchanges of several weeks or months.

Approximately 36 percent of Rotary Youth Exchange students are hosted or sent by the clubs in the United States and Canada. European countries account for about 40 percent, and 12 percent come from Australia and New Zealand. Asian clubs sponsor 5 percent, and 7 percent come from Latin American countries. Over 70 percent of all Rotary districts participate in Youth Exchange activities.

Youth Exchange is a highly recommended program for all Rotary clubs as a practical activity for the enhancement of international understanding and goodwill.

Ask The Geek:

The Geek & The Web Monster have finally solved our email problems.

Thanks to the intervention of KGM International Service Director David "Cares" Harilela and the nice people at Pacificnet Hosting (not to be confused with Pacific Supernet, who would be affectionately described by Australians as "bloody useless").

Hence, all "@rckgm.org" email distribution lists are working again as intended.

Grumpy grumbles:

Don't you just hate
the way you continually receive SPAM emails about pornographic web sites? It's bad enough when they just talk what's available at a certain website, but when they actually include images in the message, surely that must be illegal?

For example yesterday, I received a truly disgusting link, which apparently portrays naked Rotarians from District 3450 frolicking around the Hong Kong countryside.

Please do not click here unless you're really interested in seeing that sort of thing.

Who Am I?

What is the more common name of mad-cap movie comedian Jerome (Jerry) Silberman?

Clue: A good buddy of Mel Brooks.

The answer appears at the bottom of this issue.

Golden Smile:

A man comes drunk as a skunk and is met by his wife, who is scowling because she suspects her husband has been unfaithful.

"Where have you been all night?" she demands.

"At a business dinner at a fantastic new bar," he says. "The Golden Saloon.  Everything there is made of gold".

"Nonsense!  There's no such place!"

The husband insists, "Sure there is!  The bar has huge golden doors, a golden floor, golden chairs and golden tables. Hell, it even has a golden urinal"

The wife doesn't believe his story so, the next day, she checks the phone book and finds a place called the Golden Saloon.  She calls up to check her husband's story.

"Is this the Golden Saloon?" she asks when the bartender answers the phone.

"Yes, it is," bartender answers.

"Do you have huge golden doors and a golden floor?"

"Sure do."

"Do you have golden chairs and golden tables?"

"Most certainly do."

"What about a golden urinal?"

There's a long pause, then the woman hears the bartender yelling, "Hey, Duke, I think I got a lead on the guy who soiled your saxophone!"

Quotable Quotes:

""Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt and dance like nobody's watching !"
